He has been peeing in the potty since 1 but he freaks when it comes to pooping. He just cries when we have him sit to poop because we know when he has to go and he will just hold it til you are not watchin and then hide and do it. We have tried rewards, putting his potty in a priviate place and the big potty. Any new suggestions?

This is what worked for me too. I talked to my son and told him he was a big boy now and that he had to start going to the potty. We went out together and he chose his new underwear and he was really excited when he got home. At first he still had a lot of accidents so I told him I would have to put a diaper back on. Then he really decided himself because he felt if he put on a diaper again he was a baby and he said he's not a baby. Ever since he's been pooing and peeing on the potty all by himself. He tells us when he has to go just in case we have to help him. Oh, I also took him out to choose his own toilet seat. I think the two things together really helped.

When I potty trained my son, I took him right out of diapers. He only used pullups for sleeping. When he would poop in his underwear or pullup, I would scoop his poop from his underwear with toilet paper and put it in the potty, no matter how gross it was. That way it would show him where it was supposed to go. I didn't make a huge deal out of it because I didn't want him to feel really bad or anything, but being in underwear and pooping I think is extreamly uncomfortable, so once I started showing him where it went and no matter how gross it was, I kept on doing it, he caught on within the first week or 2. It definitally takes patients and determination but it worked.

Another thing to think about is maybe it hurts. Maybe he's a little constipated, or it feels too wierd. I would also distract my son by reading books to him. That way he sat kind of still which I think kind of helped too.

I would definitally toss the diapers though. Buy some brand new underwear with some pictures of something he likes, maybe cars or whatever, then when he goes to the washroom in them and he has to take them off, he might be upset becuse he might like wearing them. that might help. Other than that, I'm all out of ideas. Best of luck!

My son was the same way. My husband and I started making him clean himself when he would poop in his underwear. That didn't work, cause it kinda just turned into a game. I tried stickers, candy, you name it I tried it. He was still 3. He would hold it all day, even through daycare. Then he got interested in Thomas the Train and I bribed him with the small trains. It took awhile, but he finally started going. Then I would get him one after going poop like 2 or 3 times so it wasn't everytime. Then I just stopped getting him one and now he does it without wanting anything. I mean I just used what he was interested in at the time. I think what else worked was him being in daycare and knowing other kids were doing it too. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you.

My son had problems getting the hang of going on the potty but on his third birthday we gave had a "big boy day" where he picked his own clothes, breakfast, what he did, and we said now he's a big boy he needed to start going on the potty all the time we let him unwrap a package of underpants with his favorite charactor on them and gave him a new big boy hair cut and he started going that day all by himself, he has done it since with hardly any accidents. He needed his own celebration to become a big boy and potty and poop on the toilet.

Ya he has pooped in some odd place. But I have done that and we have sat on the potty for 2 n half hours til he fell asleep. We do watch him really close thats why he goes days without pooping. But thank u, and as of now thats the best thing we can do is make him sit there.

It might sound mean but i had the same problem with my son and it's as if he was scared of it when having to poop but peeing was just fine. So when i knew he had to go i would just relax with him and keep sitting him on it until he went which could take up to an hour or more and he too held it in all the time......when he finally couldn't hold it in anymore he cried as he pooped in the potty but when he was done i showed him and praised my ass off to him! lol! I jumped up and down, yelled hurray and clapped and everything....i made it as exciting as possible and called him such a big boy and lets go get a treat and he was so thrilled!!! We still had to sit and watch him a few more times, but it wasn't nearly as bad and after that he was so great!!! It just takes patience. I would keep a closer eye on him because of him hiding and doing it......you don't want him thinking that is ok.....my friend has some nasty experiences with that and let's just say not a fun clean up!

When someone figures out a good way to get your kids to poop on the potty please let me know as well. My son is 3 and won't poop on the potty either, but I don't push it because he has a lot of constipation problems and I have to give him bran and prune juice all the time to even go. If there is some magic way and anyone knows please let me know as well.

My daughter wouldn't either for the longest time. She has just started and she has yet to make it everytime. I tried everything and she finally just got the hang of it and started doing it on her own. Hang in there and he will get it in time!
