My 3 yr. old is in swim lessons. He's afraid to go w/ his teacher in the water even though he can touch the bottom. Any ideas on how to handle this?

He's been in lessons for four days now. He won't join his group because he says he's scared. But when it's over with, he will go down the tornado slide. I don't get it. How can he be scared of the shallow end, but not of the huge tornado slide.

maybe the slide is just more fun?? my kids won't go in the water unless they're in a floatie or someone holds them. we even tried the just throwing them in because they naturally float. yeah my boys just sink. when i get more money i'll take them to swim lessons.

Is it possible he doesn't like his teacher? Or doesn't want to do the things she says (say perhaps put his face in the water), speaking as a former lifeguard/instructor it could be any number of things, is he allowed to wear a lifejacket while going down the slide? Do you take him swimming at all? Do you think perhaps he could be putting on a show because you're there and he doesn't want to leave you? It might help to have someone else take him, or even to leave while he's in (you can reappear just stand somewhere he doesn't know about). There are so many factors here my guesses would be perhaps letting him have a lifejacket for the first few lessons or toys (something he feels secure with), taking him swimming yourself so he gets used to water, and of course the hand him over prospect as a Mom now myself I realize how hard to must have been for parents to hand over a child that at the beginning was screaming but in all my cases it never lasted more than a few seconds (maybe 2 minutes at the most). One more suggestion I have is if he has a friend perhaps talking that Mom into putting her child into lessons with yours so he has someone he knows
