I sucked my thumb until I was 15!!! There is really no good way to break the habit. A friend of mines daughter got a staff infection on her thumb and her doctor suggested she tie her sleeve so that she couldn't suck on it while it healed. She no longer sucks her thumb, it broke the habit. She was only 2 though.

My son is 6 and a half and stucks him thumb. I have found that the kids at school are helping him get out of the habit. Peer pressure. My dr advised me that he does it when he is nervous. and he also does it when he is tired. He used to do it all the time but with school he is only doing it at home at bed time. there are books at like borders and what not for kids that talk about it. i can't remember the name. sorry.

I was a thumb sucker at night till I was about 12. Nothing my parents did worked, and they tried everything! Throwing away my blanky, lemon juice on my thumb, gross nail polish stuff that is super bitter, yelling, berrating, embarassing me.... none of it worked. The only thing that got me to stop was I grew out of it. Maybe try explaining to your daughter that she's a big girl and big girls don't suck their thumbs. Or try replacing it with something else comforting (cuddling with a stuffed animal). Just please don't belittle her or make her feel like she is doing something wrong, because that only leads to feelings of guilt and the need to comfort herself (which would be sucking her thumb!) I quit sucking my thumb but have retained the habit of rubbing my quilt on my face at bedtime when I get really stressed out. Good luck with getting her to stop!
