my baby is hibernating!

My 13 month old son has started taking crazy long naps! Normally, he sleeps about 12 hours in the night, and then takes a 1.5-3 hour nap in the afternoon. Yesterday, though, he seemed really sleepy so I put him down at noon, and he slept until 5:20! That's almost five and a half hours!
He slept great through the night again, and today took a 4.5 hour nap, and that's just because I went up to his room and rustled around so that he would wake up. Even when he's up, he's very mellow, and has started sucking his thumb. This is not normal.
What do you think? Is this doctor-worthy? I'll feel pretty dumb going in and saying, "My baby is really relaxed."
He's teething his molars right now. Could that be affecting him this way? Or is it a growth spurt? He has a tiny cold, but it doesn't seem to bother him. I just don't know what to think.

Probably a growth spurt. If he is eating like he's starving all the time then it is probably that. You mentioned he only has one day sleep. Have you recently changed from having two to one? If so, he may be very tired while his little body is getting used to having only one day sleep. I have a 13 month old and she goes to sleep at around 9am for approx 90 mins and then again at about 1pm for 2 hours. Most babies at this age still have two sleeps a day and sleep 12-14 hours a night.

This was very helpful for me. I am a mom of 5. Oldest being 20 and the baby is 18 months old. It's been 8 years sense I have had a "BABY" to care for. My 18 month old son sleeps 10-12 hours at night (sometimes wakes up in the night to crawl in bed with mommy and Daddy, which I adore), and takes 2-4 hour naps. I was getting a little concerned with all the sleep he is getting. But, I keep in consideration that he is getting 4 molars and is HARD AT PLAY. Full speed the entire time.he.is awake. Eats none stop. But, still worried about how much he sleeps. This was helpful. Sometimes as u get older and the years between babies......it is like being a NEW Mom all over again. God bless!

i wouldnt be worried i have four little ones, and each of them slept through the night from 2 wks and from about 12 months they had good 4-5 hour naps during the day and still slept all night!! so i dnt think it should be any thing to worry about unless you feel he is not him self !! you should enjoy while it lasts :)

I'd say growth spurt, but it wouldn't hurt to give the pediatrician a call.. I know my children's pediatrician's office when you call you can just speak with a nurse, if they think it is worth coming in for then they set up an appointment right away.

Anything that worries you is doctor worthy your doctor understands that your new at this and is trained to deal with new mom jitters. But what was told to me the first time around if your baby is eating normal and is up for a few hours of play it may just be growth sperts some childrens bodys get tired when they are growing so instead of being misrable theybreak down and sleep i know the fear specially if u have a child that doesn't normally nap. If this answer isn't what your looking for call ur doctor just to be safe,

Is he eating more than normal? My little cousin is 3, and every single time he goes through a growth spurt he eats more, and naps like a bear! I think kids just do that when they're growing, but if it lasts a while, contact his pediatrician.

Thanks, everyone. I feel better. Today he had only a three hour nap, which is still long, but more in his normal range.
I know, Bonnie! I thought for sure that he'd wake up at night with those long naps, but no, he sleeps right through.
Tameka, I changed to one nap about two months ago, so I don't think it's that. But he does eat all the time he's awake, so I bet it is a growth spurt.

I think it is probably a mix of the teething and his cold. You are lucky he is sleeping that much during the day and is still sleeping through the night.

Bahaha hibernating. Logan would always take extra long naps on rainy days when he was a younger baby when teething etc. I think this is fairly normal.

I would attribute it to the teething and growing. If it goes on for longer than a week, though, I'd definately be calling the doctor. For now, just enjoy a little extra time to relax or get a few more things done.
