My dealings with the Mirena IUD

I'm waiting on my appointment to not only have my IUD removed, I believe that I am pregnant. It has been more than 5 years since I got it and the last time I was at a doctor. I was told that it had expired. It partially has scared me because of problems I've been having. My appointment is next Friday morning and I am so very excited!

I want to get mine removed, I've had mine since July and have been suffering from severe lower tummy pain since. It wore off for a while but has now come back worse. I dont know what to do, have you experienced this? Please help, I dont know what to do!

Mirena's hormonal intervention DOES expire after 5 years, but it does act as a physical barrier. Removal will cause cramps. If you are pregnant, this could cause a miscarriage. Make sure you take a pregnancy test before removal to make sure. You have to get it out no matter what, but know that removal always endangers a pregnancy.

It's possible your symptoms are instead related to the lack of progesterone, now that it's depleted from the Mirena, and it's just your body re-adjusting.

Also, removal is very quick and painless, unlike insertion which takes several minutes and is uncomfortable. You don't even need to be on your period to get it removed.
