My little guy seems like he's ready to start potty training. I have the potty set up for him, but he will go poop and then sit on the potty. I have been trying to explain to him that he has to come to the potty and then go poo poo. How do I get him to understand?

My 22 month old seems like he's ready to start potty training and I have set the potty up for him. He will do his business in his diaper, come tell me and then run to sit on his potty. How do I get him to understand that he has to let me know before he does his business in the diaper?

I have also used a potty chart with my daughter and it worked wonders!! She loved getting to put stickers on, although she was a bit older than 22 months when she mastered potty training. Even if kids express interest in the potty, they may not be old enough to understand exactly how it works. I wouldn't discourage his efforts, but they are all ready at their own time. However, my mother-in-law used to put her kids in the shower and scrub their bums down with cold water if they pooped in their diaper. They quickly learned that it was not ok. But that is for kids who are just too lazy to use the potty but understand what it is for.

We checked out "Once Upon a Potty" and let our son sit without clothes on while he watched.  It is a very short video so we let him watch it as much as he wanted.  He wanted to be like "Joshua." I didn't push the issue too much, but acted like it was fun and would ask him to try periodically.  Sometimes he'd say yes and sometimes no, eventually - about 2 months later - he decided he didn't want a diaper and we bought "big boy" underpants, which he calls "wonderpants."  Now he only wears a diaper at night and I take him potty without problem at regular times during the day.

What I did with both my boys is if the did a poop in their diaper or pants I would take the to the bathroom right away and deposit the poop in to the toilet with small explanation of that is where the poop goes. They I would let them flush it down as though they went on the potty and congratulate them.

you can also try throwing the poop from his diaper into the potty to make him see where the poop goes

Try dumping his poo in his potty while he watches. Tell him this is where it goes, not in his diaper. Also try putting him on the potty anytime your in the bathroom, to brush your teeth, go to the bathroom yourself or any other time you are in there. Also if you notice he seems like he needs to go, or is in the middle of going, take him in there and set him on the potty. Good Luck!

My daughter does the same thing. I got her a reward chart and every time she uses the potty I put a sticker on the chart, she knows that if she gets so many stickers she will get a treat at the end of it. It has helped alot. Also boys are lazier than girls I had problems with my son going for a poo until he was nearly 4 and a half I washed his pants out to start with but ended up getting sick of doing it so i chucked them in the bin and as soon as my son knew I was going to throw his pants out that I had let him choose and was his favorite ones he stopped going in his pants and started going on the toilet. Keep up with what you are doing your son will get there x

first of all take the diaper away. he will poop in his undies but how i dealt with that is i started throwing away his poopy pants. he didnt like it when i threw out his favorite pants. after that he never pooped his pants again. i just told him i was sick of cleaning poopy pants and that if he was going to continue pooping in them then i refuse to clean them. it worked like a charm.
