My Son Has A Lump!!!

My now almost 8 month old son suddenly developed some swelling on the left side of his face, into his left ear canal, back in January, (he was 5 mths old). It swelled fast, and I took him to the emergency room as soon as we noticed it. Since then we've seen several doctors, 3 ER drs, 3 pediatricians, 1 GP, plus our family doctor. Hes had bloodwork, antibiotics, ultrasounds, pictures to document the growth of the swelling. At first they thought it could be mumps, an ear infection or an insect bite of some sort, but quickly ruled all of that out. The only thing they have been able to tell us is that its swollen (obviously) and that its not a tumor. The swollen area is always warmer to touch than the rest of his face, and always a little red, but it doesn't seem to hurt him at all. He has big chubby cheeks so up until now, people haven't really noticed it much except the family who see him all the time. But now its getting very noticable, since it just keeps swelling more and more. We have an appointment with a specialist at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in June, which is totally frustrating because that will have been 6 months of this random swelling before hes even seen by anyone who can help him. And the doctor there doesn't seem to be worried about it at all, while our pediatrician here, who referred us to Sick Kids, is quite upset that its taking so long... I guess I'm just frustrated that its taking so long, and that all they can tell me is that its swollen, I could have told them all that, I want to know why? Has anyone had any experience with anything like this? Sorry its so long...

it is stressful when doctors aren't concerned about something that is obviously something to worry about.
The bottom inch of my son's left lung is collapsed. We only found this out after having to wait 10 days to see if the chest x-ray my son's doctor ordered was showing pneumonia or if it was something else...10 days with a possible chance of pneumonia in a 3 year old! Found out it wasn't pneumonia...instead part of his lung had collapsed...they decided to see if it would fix itself and scheduled an appointment 6 weeks later! That appointment is just over 3 weeks away now. but I'm frustrated...a partially collapsed lung doesn't seem like something that should be given 6 weeks to fix itself! 2 weeks ok, MAYBE 4 weeks, but 6 seems a little dangerous. I'm not a push over when it comes to doctors and their recomendations, I ask questions and research etc, and if I disagree with the doctor I'm not afraid to step up and challenge what the doctor says, but they would not give me an appointment sooner then 6 weeks grrrr! On top of everything I am due to give birth just over 2 weeks after this appointment! If his lung hasn't corrected itself by that point then there is going to be a lot going on with my son just before and perhaps even after baby is born!!!

Wow...sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your post...I didn't realize this bothered me this much, I guess I've been stewing about it.
Anyway, from what I understand it is hard to get a quick appointment with any specialist unless there is indications it is life threatening or could quickly become life threatening. I'm sorry that you are dealing with this...the waiting is the hardest part, it is nerve racking and stressful. I've had a few crying fits over this worrying that my son will be in the hospital needing me when I go into labor and I'll have to leave. I hope everything turns out good for you and your boy and that what ever is going on is easily diagnosed and treated! Praying for you all!!!

Hi Mom
My son is currently having the exact same problem. We are living in South Africa.
I was just wondering, did your son ever come right? And what did they say it was? And how did they help him? Your response would be highly appreciated. I am going out of my mind. Ive been to every doctor with no help.

I wish I could just go to the hospital and say I'm not leaving until they see him, but unfortunately, our hospital has seen him several times already, and the hospital we are referred to is a good 8 hour drive away... i suppose we could just go and try but if they send us home and then want us back again in June it would cost too much and I wouldn't be able to get him there for his appointment...

They said they weren't worried at that point because it was only a small part of his lung that collapsed. But I wonder how long it has been collapsed? And what complications could come if it has been collapsed the whole 6 months that he was showing the symptoms that caused us to get him the chest x-ray in the beginning. But it will all work out in the end.

I hope they figure out what is wrong with your boy quickly! Maybe your doctor could call and try for an earlier appointment. When we thought DS had pneumonia, before we found out it was actually partially collapsed, my doctors office had to fight to get him an appointment in 10 days rather then the more then 30 the hospital set up knowing it looked like he had pneumonia! I really don't like trying to get appointments with specialists in hospitals. Next time I might try to get a specialist with a private practice...might be easier to get a timely appointment.

You poor thing, that must be really stressful. I haven't had anything like this happen but if I did I would be visiting every library, particularly university libraries and search through medical journals for something similar. I hope you get some answers soon :)
