My son is going to be 2 in a couple weeks and he is only in size 12 months clothes. Would this be a cause for concern? He is pretty small for his age. The only kind of testing they did for him was a sweat test to test for CF which came back negative (thank goodness). Would there be any other reason for him being so small?

My son will be four in janurary. He weighs 28 pounds. My girl will be 2 this week and weighs 29 pounds. I am very concerned about his height and weight. He still looks like was did when he was 2. I give him boost with vitamins. I talked with dr about this but havent really got any where.

They never found anything wrong with him he is just going to be a small boy lol, he is 30 months old and is just starting to grow out of 12 month pants, but he can still wear them it's just looking a little shorter on him

Hi there.....I'm in the same situation as you! My little girl is 17 months old, and only weighs 18 pounds! Let me know what they find!

I should add that our son, who is 5 and a half, is the opposite. He's the same size as his sister (she is barely 40lbs at 7 and a half years old) and I'm pretty sure he just takes after his daddy (my hubby is a bigger guy). Every time a new doctor mentions our daughter's size (she sees specialists for other reasons..not size related), I just look at them and say "Look at me. Am I big? No. She won't be either."

I wouldn't worry unless the doctor is concerned. Our daughter is 7 and a half and they constantly worry about her height and weight, even though she was only 4lbs 4oz - 17.5 inches at birth (preemie) and I'm very small myself. They did so many tests on her and they were just not needed. One of the first things they checked her for was celiac disease (wouldn't be able to tolerate gluten), so if you are really concerned you could mention that. But, like I said, unless the doctor is worried, I wouldn't be. He may just be a little guy, that's all :)

my daughter turned 2 in march and is only 23 pounds and wears mostly 18 month clothes, only cause she tall, all her pants either have belts to hold them up or the adjuster things, i just tried on all her 12 month clothes from last summer and they fit, even some of the 9 month shorts since length isnt a concearn. I was told by my ped as long as she stays around 5% for weight on the charts that she is fine

I know how u feel, its so stressful when your little one is smaller than other bubs their age..my little girl is 19 mnths and only just weighs over 9 kilo, she's a very fussy eater and she's still very dependent on the breast. But reading the comments on this page it seems that our little ones aren't alone and hopefully our little ones will have a growth spurt soon and we'll all get to breath a big sigh of relief. :)

Hi! Well, my baby boy was born on the 26 wga. Nowdays, he's 16 months and wearing 6-9 months clothes. He's 27 inches long and 20 lbs. I was concern, but now i''m careless. Kids are like they parents. I'm 5'2 and my husband is 5'8, so our baby isn't getting any bigger :-)

Was he full term or a premie. The reason I ask is my twin sons we born at 33wks and they are small for their age. The clothes they are wearing this summer fit them last summer. As long as he is not having other development issues I would not worry. My daughter is also small for her age but her Dad and I are not big people. I'm only 5ft and hes 5'10. The best advice I could give is to go with your gut. If you feel like something is wrong with him research as much as you can. I really hope it is nothing, that he's just a small guy. Good luck!

My neighbor's son was always small for his age, but when he was about 7 and really tiny compared to his peers, the doctor became concerned and tested him. A. did not make any growth hormone and so there was a big fight with the insurance company, which declared it an "experimental treatment" because these days we use recombinant or lab-made growth hormone, instead of growth hormone from cattle. Of course, at $1000 per month the company definitely did not want to pay it. Eventually, however, they had to consent so A.'s dad could give up his second job. A. was on one shot a day until he was 16. He has ended up at 5' 10" but without the shots he would have ended up somewhere around 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall.

You still have a long way to go before you should be concerned, though. Some kids are just small. You might ask your mom and your husband's mom if you or your husband were small - some kids suddenly spurt up in the teen years so everything turns out fine.

These comments were really nice to read because I've been concerned about my sons growth. He is 33 months and is only 24lbs and 34 1/2 inches. He is too tall for 18 month pants but too skinny for them at the same time. I have talked to his family doctor, been to a pediatrician and a nutritionist and they aren't concerned so I'm not as concerned anymore. I just make sure I feed him full fat milk products and I have given him Enfagrow Toddler.

My son was the opposite (he's 2 and a half) and between 6 months and 18 months he had a huge growth spurt and was fitting into 2-3 clothes, but since then he has slowed down, my daughter is the opposite she is 15months and she is in a HUGE range of clothes (she's skinny rather than shorter though) so she can fit into anything from 6-9 month clothes up to 12-18month clothes. I wouldn't worry, he may have a growth spurt all of a sudden and be grown out of his clothes, He may just be small at the moment xx

Honestly, some of the clothes they make out there are way too big. Some of the pants are way too long. I've never seen a 2 year old that tall!

My 4.5 year old still wears some pants that are size 2 and 3. My 2.5 year old still wears some pants that are size 18 months. If your son's doctor hasn't sounded concerned then try not to let it bother you.

Elizabeth,

Some children are just small honey. I have a nephew that is 4 and he wears a size 2. He will hit his growth spurt when his body is ready and when he does, look out and lock up the cabinets! LOL. Good luck!

I have a home daycare and it is suprising how many kids are small or parents have reason for concern. The jist parents tell me is that if they have plenty of energy and their feet are growing then they are most likely okay. There are certain high fat foods, such as avacado or ensure, that you can feed them to help them grow. I have seen kids with a very high motabolism or genetically they are just smaller. It is not necessarily a reason for concern but check with your Doctor just to be sure.

Is his doctor concerned? If not I would not worry. Our son has always been on the small side but so am I and so is his father so it makes sense. Our son is 2.5 and still wears 18 month pants. He's short and his waist is small, but he's thriving, he eats and drinks, he’s happy and his pediatrician is not concerned. Some kids are just small that doesn't necessarily mean something’s wrong.
