My daughter, Hayden is a 3 year old toddler who doesn't really eat all that much. She seems to (somewhat) eat her lunch, but when it comes to dinner, she hardly even touches her food. It frustrates my husband and I, and we're not sure how to handle it. We figure that she will be hungry for breakfast, but it's almost the same thing. she hardly eats. I don't want other people thinking I don't feed my children...and Hayden is fairly skinny.

any advice? should there be any discipline involved?

My kids went threw a stage like that too. My doctor told me not to get stressed about it because making a big deal out of it can make the situation worse...and kids are really good at sensing your feelings. As long as she's drinking enough and taking some kind of multivitamin everyday, she should eventually outgrow this stage...just be patient. He also suggested leaving healthy snacks out that they could grab when ever they wanted, it might help her get more to eat throughout the day....good luck!

Quoting Claire:

my son went through that stage....i stressed and worried so much but when i spoke to my health visitor she said not to worry as long the child is drinking and not losing too much weight and seems well enough as its a stage they go through. i found the more i stressed, then more my little one saw how he was affecting me and saw he was in control. my advice is to put meals in front of her as normal and if she dont eat them then after every1 else has finished take hers away without making a fuss. try not to make the same mistakes i did of giving chocalate, sweets ect as your child will then use that against you. do you eat as a family ? as i found eatting as a family helped. my son grew out of it really quickly, but it was hard for me.....if you want to talk am happy to good luck it does get better

yah we eat as a family and we try to encourage our kids to eat all of their food.  we don't even give her that much to eat, so that she wouldnt be so intimidated by the amount of food we give her....and still it doesn't seem to work.  there are certain foods she eats, but others she wont touch and i want her to be opened to different foods.

My 3 year old is the same way. He had about a week where he only wanted pb & j sandwiches and then he'd just lick the stuff off the bread. I'd just make sure she's still getting enough to drink. I agree that she'll eat when she's hungry, and to make sure she has vitamins.

My daughter is 18 months and some times she goes through these lil spats where shes just not that hungry and if you think about yourself....i'm sure it happens from time to time as well.

What we always do is , we figure when shes hungry she'll eat..and i don't want to ever encourage eating when shes not hungry..cause in my opinion that can snow ball into another situation entirely.

As for a suggestion. Perhaps make sure she takes a vitamin or a drink some sort of supplement just to make sure she gets the right vitamins and nutrients every day. Other than that, trust me I have three siblings and they all went through stuff and my daughter has gone through times where she eats like a bird. They will eat when they are hungry.
