I just had my first baby 6 weeks ago and was really worried about labor too. I agree with Liz that you have to expect pain but also you have to trust your body. Be open to options. I planned on trying to go completely natural and did for 16 hours before deciding I wanted an epidural. I was happy I hadn't made any promises to others or myself to not do so.

Remember that when you're at the hospital you're the most important person in that room after your baby. If you need something or have a question about what the nurse is doing or when something will happen, ask them. Its their job to help you. They do deliveries all the time and know exactly what's going. This will be your first experience and you need to understand what's going on with your body so you can have the most positive experience possible.

One thing I'm happy I did was prepare my hospital bag well in advanced. I had everything I'd need for my stay including paperwork in a bag ready to go 4 weeks before my due date. I filled out as much of my hospital and birth certificate information out as I could ahead of time so I'd have less to do at the hospital. I also gave my best friend a list of names and numbers of people to call/text for me with updates about my labor. It was nice to not be the one to have to answer a million phone calls when I was in labor and didn't feel good.

Just remember its OK to be scared. You've never done the before and don't know what to expect. It would be weird if you weren't a little anxious about it. I just told myself if women could give birth in log cabins and make it, then I could have a baby in a hospital. It'll be fine.

I would say: expect the pain. It hurts. Worse than anything you've ever had happen (most likely). BUT, having said that, labor is a natural pain, your body knows what to do. Your body was designed to give birth. Have a plan as to whether you will have any pain meds while in labor. Research the different kinds or ask your doc about them. Once your baby is born, you will also have to deliver the placenta - so when your doc says to "push one more time", it's not because there's another baby in there! Like I said, your body knows what to do - trust it. Also, listen to your doc, but if he/she is pushing for you to do something you don't understand or don't want (like having pain meds if you have decided against them, or doing a c-section) don't be afraid to ask questions. Good luck, and you can do it!

It's natural to be a little scared when you're having your first, I was scared about number 2 as well lol. What are you specifically worried about?
The best thing I can advise is to plan for things that you know will happen - labour, nappy changing, bathtime, buy clothes etc and just learn everything else as you go along. It will seem overwhelmibg for a couple of weeks but it is so worth it when they first smile at you :) x
