does anyone feel like they don't know how to 'play' with their baby? I feel like i don't know what to do, or that i'd rather sit with my 7month old on my lap and tickle and gigle with him rather than play on the floor and i just don't know what to do with him or how to play. I feel like an awful mom, even though my husband and mother say i'm not, i don' t know what to do. does anyone else feel this way or am I over thinking this?

You said you tickle and giggle with him. That IS playing! You're doing a great job, don't let anyone tell you different. You can bring some toys out and show him how you play with them and joke around and be goofy. It might be hard at first if its not in your personality but I know I can be a little crazy/silly when its just my daughter and I at home. When my daughter was really little I would act like I was dancing with her. I would hold her hand and pretend to do the waltz and she LOVED it. All kids love to dance around. Put some music on and dance with your little guy!

You are NOT a bad Mom. My 9 months old would much rather play by himself with his books and toys then play with me any day. I try to sit on the floor with him and read a book or try to teach him some words. I will aslo help him walk. He can pull himself up, but wont walk. He seems to LOVE this. Then Daddy gets home from work and he will play with him. Encourage you husband to do so. Good luck and you are not doing anything wrong.

If you haven't joined already maybe you should try this site has weekly expectations and reports as well as suggestions of activities. Use your imagination as far as play time. Is he crawling yet? If so consider simple things like playing with sensory balls or blowing bubbles... also there re some inexpensive classes generally at rec centers and (okay well I love nearly everything about them) kids gymboree also are open enrollment and offers age appropiate arts, crafts, music, and obstacle courses. My son and I do water play, also making a band with pots and wooden spoons...there are the extended walks and talks, heck making a trip out of going to toysrus and not purchasing anything but letting the kids explore the toys which are already out. Chuck E Cheese is free and (will definitely require a post bath after touching all of those toys) but is a nice alternative and all of the lights seems to keep them preoccupied.

Well, hopefully it helps. Again, has many suggestions for activites so just be creative and have fun and I am sure baby will do the same.

When my kids were that little I used to chase them (crawling). When I'd catch up to them I'd tickel their feet or sides quickly so they thought they had gotten away. They went exstatic! it got their adrennaline pumping. Sometimes I'd just barly reach them on purpose, so they would try harder to get away and laugh harder. I now do this with other kids and every one seems to love it. You may just be built for the older types but eventually your little one will be big enough for you to know how to play with them. It's a really great thing that you are trying!

I was like that until he started walking. I really didn't know what to do besides helping him play with his toys. When he started walking we played peak a boo or chase.
