My lil Mano is 5.5 months old and until recently has napped like a champ. We sleep trained 2 weeks ago using cio (cried for 25 mins the first night with no swaddle or soother slept good since) but I'm at a loss for naps. I can't let him cry for the whole hr (weissbluth) and usually naps are only 30-40 mins and he REFUSES the catnap late aft. Occasionally he naps an hr and a half but very rarely. He seems grumpy all the time now I think he's OT and I've extended his waketimes dramatically over the past week from 1.5 hr-2-2.5 hrs he seems ok with that but my problem is if he wakes early from 2nd nap he's up for 5+ hrs before bed! Tried pitting him down early for bed but he cried till normal bedtime :( I don't really know what kind of response I'm lookin for I just need a pick me up! I dread nap times now and it sucks!!! Btw he goes to bed 7:45-8 and gets up 6-7:30

Just to be clear the only time I left him to cry was that first night of sleep training and it was 25 mins-one time deal he hasn't cried since except if he wakes half hr into a nap and even then I only let him go for 5 mins because he was just beside himself and it broke my heart!! What I was sayin was I could never let him cry for a whole hr!! That just seems cruel to me :(

So your infant now sleeps a whole 11-12 hours through the night (whereas previously he didn't), and now he is napping less during the day? That's actually logical.

OK, allow me to explain something to you. Infants, children, etc, only NEED a certain number of hours sleep in a 24 hour period. On average, a child you son's age needs around 14 hours. But every child is different, so this could be give or take an hour (so 13 hours or 15 hours).

So the situation you have is that he is sleeping anywhere up to 12 hours at night. He doesn't need so much napping through the day.

Keep that in mind when you leave your infant to cry for so long. Maybe you are expecting too much to have him sleeping 12 hours at night and then all those hours during the day.

My daughter is the same way. She sleeps through the night, which is great- i get my sleep....but she is so difficult during the day that I can't do ANYTHING. Some days she will nap better than others, but the only way I can get her to nap is by swaddling her and then dancing her to sleep...then just before she's completely asleep I feed her so she's full and may sleep longer, and then I transfer her to the bouncy chair and bounce it anytime she stirs and often she will go back to sleep. A lot of work for what could just be a few mins of sleep. I totally sympathize with you.

I know this may sound crazy and I am sure your days are long but be happy that he sleeps through the night. My son is 5 months. He goes down about 8:30/9pm and wakes every night at 2am but not to eat just to get put back to sleep. Is he cranky during the day? If he is not, I would let him be. If he is...try a swing or bouncer or car ride if you can.
