Postpartum hair loss

I had my son in December of 2008, and almost immediately I noticed that I was losing a lot of hair in the shower. He just turned 5 months this week, and I'm still losing just as much hair. I would estimate that I lose 20-40 strands of hair every day in the shower and more all throughout the day when I wear my hair down. Does anyone else lose this much still or know when it should stop? Is it just the hormones that make it fall out?

Its normal to loose hair after pregnancy; your hair grows faster when you are pregnant due to the extra hormones, so afterwards those hormone levels drop. With my first baby, my hair went from super thick and curly to thinner and curly, it made life a LOT easier as far as hair went, lol. With this baby, I see no real change, I am actually loosing less hair than normal. If you are breastfeeding then your hormone levels will be slightly higer than if you are bottle feeding, so that can be one factor.

Just have patience, you won't go bald; your hormone levels will even out.

did u stop taking your pre-natal vitamins? because if you did your doc should have had you stop them gradually because it puts a major shock to your body when you just go cold turkey.

My hair got super thick with both pregnancies and I lost lots until about 6 months pp. It's the change in hormones, the same ones that make acne come or go, and makes your nails grow.
It's a pain in the butt but totally normal

My daughter is 4 months-and last weekend I noticed that I have a receeding hairline! I have TONS of hair so this was a huge shock to me. I called my Dr and he said that its normal (more normal to happen then not to happen) and that nursing tends to make it worse. Up to 18 months....He also ordered bloodwork to check my thyroid-just to be sure-explaining that sometimes thyroid problems are dormant until post partum.

I am also experiencing hair loss. I had a natural birth so it has nothing to do with medications etc. I read that hair loss can be from numerous things, hormone changes after birth, sickness or stress, thyroid problems to name a few. My doctor told me that the hair loss should last about 3 months if it's caused by birth or sickness. So far it's been about 2 months. I have had my thyroid tested, but I'm waiting for the results.
As a note, you may or may not know that it's possible to get a temporary thyroid problem postpartum.
