This is my 4th pregnancy and I've had pain in my rib before during my 3rd trimester through all 3 of my kids. This time though. It was just a bruise kind of pain and now it's like there is a pocket knife along my rib stuck in a ligament or it sometimes feels like a nerve. I can only get up and clean for about 2hrs/day and then I'm layed up with pain for hrs. Sometimes it's constant and lingering, other times I will feel fine and get sharp jags of pain that only last a second to a couple of minutes. The bigger I get, the more it hurts and the bigger the area affected gets. And sleeping is close to impossible. The doctor says all I can do is take tylenol and use a heating pad! I was literally in tears last night and I have a pretty good tolerance to pain. Heat packs help but I have to pretty much carry it around all day, heating it up every 10 min. or so. And it still hurts to do any reaching so can't get much cleaning done. Now the baby is starting to kick and push on the spot pretty often too. Has anyone ever found any other type of relief. You can only take so much tylenol before it stops helping anything and I'm past the point where I can take ibuprofen.

I thought I'd update in case someone else has this problem. My doctor actually thinks my liver is bruised. My pain started out feeling like a cracked rib, then a pulled tendon, then a nerve, and it wasn't until 35 weeks that it now feels like an organ to the right of my stomache. Apparently baby has pushed a portion and bruised it, but they say once i go into labor the pain will go away. She has dropped and that relieved the pain for a few days but now it's back and harder to cope with because it feels like a torch! But it only comes in twinges that last a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes and goes away so fast. Laying down on the side that hurts now helps again though. So that's a plus. Heat/cold packs or tylenol do nothing but make it worse anymore. And I can't wear any shirts that rub that spot too much or do too much reaching out without taking breaks. Hope this helps someone.

I started having pain in my ribs at 5 months and at first my doctor told me to just take tylenol and it would go away but come back and eventually the tylenol wouldn't help. I spoke to him again about it and he said that sometimes that's the way pre eclampsia starts and he tested my urine and sure enough I had pre eclampsia. I'm not suggesting that you have that it's just best to safe than to not know. Hope you find some relief soon!

I had this exact problem!! It started at 4 months pregnant and was like a knife in my rib! I thought for sure something was wrong. The doctor even sent me for xrays on my ribs to see if it was cracked. It wasn't and I had to deal with that pain for about 6 months. I also was working ( I'm a nurse) and found that it was way worse at work with moving around. I never did find anything that helped though!! My doctor told me to try going for a rib massage, but I never did. I Hope you find something that helps as I feel your pain!!

I did tell the doctor and she thought it was my gall bladder, but I've had gall bladder pains before. This is up way too high and it's closer to the surface of the skin so she just said there is nothing they can do. I should probably bring it up again because I never thought of pre eclampsia. It definitly feels like something should be checked out.

I found a warm bath and a gentle stretch would help for a while

Talk to your doctor just to make sure it isn't anything else. I had very bad rib pain during my pregnancy and it turned out to be pre eclampsia

Giving birth was the only thing that helped me. Sometimes a nice warm bath would help temporally. I'm sorry you're in so much pain.
