questions about feeding my baby!

We've begun feeding our 6 month old solids, which he loves, but I could use some advice from you moms out there about a couple things since I forgot to ask these few things at his pediatricians appt yesterday!

1. Do you give your baby the 'solids' (even though they're not really solids!) before or after a bottle?

2. Do you do those feedings at the same time? Or do you just kind of go by your baby's cues and feed him the bottle/solids/both whenever he is hungry?

3. Might it be better to put these feedings into more of a 'breakfast, lunch, dinner' format?

4. Do you always feed the solids and bottle together? Or might you do some pureed strawberries at 11am, and then a bottle at 12:30pm (or whenever your baby is giving you cues that he's hungry)?

5. My pediatrician said a 6 month old needs only 18-24 ounces (bottles) in a 24 hour period...does that sound about right? It kind of seems like a small amount--we've been feeding him that much for awhile now and it's seemed to be working fine--but I just figured since he's getting older he'd need more ounces....

6. His pediatrician also said that the bottles throughout the day can be as many ounces as he wants to take--whether it's 2 ounces or 7 ounces--in a 24 hour period it just needs to total 18-24 ounces. Does anyone else do it like this or do you keep the bottles kind of at a set amount throughout the day?

7. Should he be messy while he eats even though he's already 6 months old? Unfortunately, we aren't able to afford a highchair at this time, but within the next couple weeks we should be able to get one---so I would assume once he's eating in the highchair the messiness won't be quite the problem that it is now??? (ex. i have to feed him in his bouncy chair which only has one of those little clip belts to hold him but he loves to move around so he is always moving forward or trying to reach his feet and put them in his mouth or drooling all over himself, his bib, the chair, his clothes and I am NOT trying to get all of those things stained!!! we're currently trying out strawberries, so the red is going to stain everything in sight! :( ) please tell me the highchair will solve these problems!!!

And any other advice/suggestions/ideas/things that have worked for you are all welcome!!!

my Dr also had told me to not portion out the food, like when I was giving her solids just feed her until she said enough or turned her head. So some days/times that was 2 spoonfuls and other days it was several oz of food, same with the milk just to give until the baby didn't want anymore but never force extra because it can erase their natural cues for hunger/fullness and lead to obesity issues... So it just varies :-)

I used this site (recommended by my Dr. when I started solids)

1. I offered solids randomly throughout the day. There is a saying "food before 1 is just for fun" meaning that the primary intake for babies should still be milk.

2. I just went by cues

3. I would usually have nursed my daughter close to wake up time, so my husband would offer food before leaving for daycare, etc. But yeah whenever you feel like he might like to eat food vs milk.

4. To babies I was told milk is food, so I wouldn't feed them at the same time when I fed her.

5. I was told some days my daughter would want mostly milk and some days mostly solids so just go by what she refuses/accepts. I typically had her milk intake at 25oz a day and the surplus calories coming from food.

Hope it helps :-)

yep just scrape with the baby spoon. Because they're already so soft they're super easy! Those were my go tos when out and about even because you don't have to bring a container then, just the actual item and spoon. Mango and Kiwi also were soft enough to do that with too as an easy fix.

so with bananas and avocados we don't need to puree them? we could just mash them and that is okay?

I didn't go make more usually when she was so small (6-8 months) it seemed to be enough whatever I had prepared. But maybe something easy like a banana or avocado if the situation came up? That way you're not scrambling to steam/puree anything.

haha okay! i'll def have to try and not worry about that cuz i def do! thank you for all your help!! but let me ask you one last thing: if your baby has eaten all the food you gave to him/her and never pulled away and didn't seem full, do you go make MORE and give it to them? Or just leave it alone?

That would be my guess that he's just showing preference now. I also did the homemade purees, so yeah I was just told to watch the baby's cues whether it was milk or solid and she would tell me how much was enough. But yeah not to worry about "baby! you need to eat 4oz of peas today!" it seems to have worked well, my daughter is 19months now and a great eater :-) so good luck!

oh really? don't portion the food out? well, i actually haven't been since we started feeding solids because since we're doing the homemade baby food we need to get a few of those ice cube trays to portion out the food and we don't have any yet (so for now we just puree a little bit of a veggie or fruit and feed it to him in a bowl)... gosh i thought trying to figure out how many ounces of formula to feed my baby was hard, but when you're incorporating solids in as well it's even harder!

and i've noticed he's started pushing the bottle out with his tongue or just stops sucking which leads to milk just pouring out from the sides of his mouth---i thought maybe he just needed to burp or was having trouble sucking for some reason, but maybe he's starting to kind of change up how much formula he wants at a feeding since he's started eating solids as well??

okay thank you!! It's just so hard to know what's 'right' to do...I don't want to feed him too much throughout the day! I'm going to take a look at that website, too!
