Just bought a house in Leland about 5 minutes from down town Wilmington. I love it. Our family loves going to the Aquarium, Libraries... their is a place called Jungle Rapids they have a big play center with a bunch of stuff for your little one to do.. only about $7.00, also a place called Monkey Joe's... I think it's less then $5.00 for a two year old. and they have a center full of bouncers. I hope this helps you out a little.

OK This might have to be a multi post thing, for me as I remember more things. Unfortunately I don't know much about the schools, because I never went to school there, I haven't heard any bad things about the public schools, but moving from the west coast to there I felt they could use a little work. But being that it is a University town they may have one of the better ones. There are some bad areas, kinda of just outside the downtown area, but its public housing and you can pretty much tell where it ends and begins. Also scattered around the city are university housings, which just means the party's and loud music and what not while school is in session. Wrightsville beach is really nice and family oriented, but a touch pricey. If I were you while I was down for the visit I would pick up a real estate book, Because even though the houses are for sale, you can pick out a neighborhood you like and then from there see if there's a rental available, if that's what you guys want to do . I would just basically stay away from downtown to live. Most of the apts and such will be students so I would stay away from them too. There are some nice communities laurel ridge, pine valley, odgen. They are family friendly with lots of young families . Grab a paper so you can get to know the community. As far as things to do there are plenty. The beaches are open all year long. Carolina beach is nice and you are able to camp there if you want, but you need a 4x4 or willing to walk with your gear. Wrightsville is nice for day trips to the beach, there are lots of little shops and places to eat, and some surfing there. Also they do a lot of filming in Wilmington, Dawson's creek, one tree hill, and a bunch of different movies were filmed there, so on occasion a road will be blocked off for filming, but you can watch them which can be exiting for little ones ( and adults too)! I have heard from different people to stay away from any of the downtown school, but i dont know if it really makes much of a difference. Also just about an hour away is Myrtle Beach, which has lots of stuff for family's to do. It can be alot of fun. I think thats all for now, but as I thinks of more things that come to mind I will keep posting. I hope this helps a little and if you have any specific questions dont hesitate to ask!

I have been out this way for about 3 years.. by husband is from wilmington though. I just know Monkey Junction area is a nice place to live.. and isnt as expensive as Wrightville beach. I live in Brunswick County. Next county over. In Leland. Small town. Love it. Houses are cheap. We just had our house built for under 150 ... it's a upcoming town. Their building alot of stores and stuff out this way. And this is about 10 miles from Downtown Wilmington over the bridge. Areas to stay away from. Would just be downtown. Like you dont want to live there. But you will find your self out that way for the events they have because it's usually downtown. lol. Their is some nice place's by the airport in Wilmington. Nice little town homes. It all depends what your looking for. A bunch of Golf courses.. Dont know if you all are into that.. heheheee.. but there is some places to take your little one to have fun. Just have to find them. I hope some of this helps you. if you have any questions feel free to ask, and if i dont know the answer I will get a answer for you..

i live in ogden, my children go to school here. pretty good school. my neighborhood is about a block from blair school, and i dont see many children outside. i dont think its a great neighborhood really. i have been in wilmington for 2 years now. i would love to know what neighborhoods are best for families. my hubby is kind of a rough around the edges out doorsy type so im not crazy about moving to a gated community or anything like that. he works for special effects company with screengems here in town. any thoughts on the best neighborhood?

Thanks Monica! I appreciate your help! Are there any areas that we should stay away from? How long have you lived in Wilmington?

Thank you so much for all of your info! It was very helpful, and yes, please continue to post as you think of more things. It sounds like such an exciting place to live! I'll bet there's a lot of traffic though. I have heard from other people that ogden is nice and has good schools. My husbands new job is about 5 mins from Wrightsville Beach, so we want to be close to his work. Keep posting, I'd love to hear more when you think of it!

Samantha, I'm having a hard time with my computer right now, so I hope you get this....I really want any information you can give me on everything. Mom groups, places to live, good areas, bad areas, things for kids to do, schools, ect. We are going there to visit this weekend for the first time. I know that my husbands new job will be about 5 min from wrightville beach. We have never relocated before, do you know what I should be looking at when we go this weekend?

I just moved from North Carolina. I lived in Durham, and Myrtle Beach, and I used to surf there alot, so I am pretty familiar with the area. What sort of things in Particular are you interested in knowing about?
