self entertainment for toddlers

My husband works nights and so trying to prepare a good healthy meal for my 2 toddlers is difficult. They are both very clingy and cry if they can't see me. I've tried having them in the kitchen with me but that can be dangerous, especially if they are playing with the tupperware and i trip. And i've tried giving them a snack in the high chair but this just seems to squelch their appetite for dinner.... any ideas? Some have said to set them in a safe place and let them cry but that just seems so traumatic. Help...

I have a two year old little boy and when I'm cooking dinner I will usually let him in the kitchen with me, on a few conditions. He can sit on his chair and do whatever at the table, he can play with the magnets on the fridge, or he can do whatever on the other side of the kitchen. He is not allowed within 10 feet of the stove in any direction, and there are no "big toys" (his ride-on cars or trucks) allowed in the kitchen at all. If he gets too rowdy or starts being disruptive and not following those rules, then he's banished from the kitchen. I put up baby gates on both entrances and listen to him cry.

sometimes i put my son in his high chair and put about 2 tablespoons of water on his tray, he will splash in the water for a good 10-15 minutes! the amount is small enough that it is not messy, but large enough for him to play. when i visit my mother, she lets him play with a metal mixing bowl and a few plastic utensils to bang. 2 toddlers i'm sure is much more difficult but hopefully this helps a little! good luck!

You could always just put them in the high chairs with some little toys or coloring books and face them towards the kitchen so the can see you while you cook. I love the crayola color wonder makers cuz my daughter cant get them all over herself if im not watching for a second
