I am hearing impaired so naturally I am doing sign language with my baby (and Dada). I was curious if you're doing sign language, how much your child knows and what age. Mine is 9 months and only knows "milk".

i started signing with my daughter when she was about 5 months and she's about to be 11 months. she only knows how to sign "all done" and "up" but she understands about 30 or so signs including "more" "eat" "drink" "milk" "blanket" "pacifier" "book" "pear" "avocado" and many others. i got her a few baby einstein dvds with signing in them, along with different books. her absolute favorite is baby einstein my first signs. she loves watching it in spanish and french more than in english. i heard that the babies will learn the most between 8 & 12 months, but won't start using the signs themselves until 12-18months. My daughter even seems to be starting to create her own signs. when she doesn't want another bite, she'll turn her head away and wrinkle her nose. she's now starting to do that with other things like toys offered to her and even what clothes i'm putting on her, especially shoes. you will have an easier time with the signs, since you prolly use them so much in your own daily life and your child sees that. i only know 50 or so signs besides the alphabet, so i'm learning right along with my daughter. and my husband only know about 5 signs.
