my little boy will be 8 months next week, and has always been a fairly good sleeper. but over the last weeks not every night he has woken up screaming and you cannot calm him down until you pick him up. then you put him down and it starts again. this will go on for about 2 hours usually at about 12/2. there are no teeth in sight. please help

my son used to do this quite regularly (and still does occasionally), but i couldn't really attribute it to teething. i asked the doc, and she said it was possible for children that young to have nightmares. usually, i have to hold him and sing to him until he calms down, then kinda do the bedtime routine all over again: lay him down, cover him up, give him his 'lovey' (a stuffed hippo), and his (now empty) bottle. i think keeping him in synch with steps he knows and expects helps him get back to sleep. if he didn't/doesn't go back to sleep and still cried/s, i let him cry for 15 min, then repeat. if that still doesn't help, then i remember what he was doing when i go to pick him up. was he chewing on his hands? was he still laying down? is he cold? chewing on his hands for him means teething pain, so he gets tylenol plus the song and routine. laying down means i don't pick him up again, but instead sing to him and rub his back until he is calm. cold, well, obviously take measure to warm him up. just because you don't see any teeth doesn't mean he's not teething though. watch him during the day, and how often he's chewing on things. good luck.
