For those that come across this post - see the link below for great simple explanation of hydrocele and inguinal hernia. My son's surgery was called a bilatereral hydrocele repair - same as a communicating inguinal hernia. He was in and out of the hospital within a few hours and was back to normal by later that day. http://www.drgreene.org/body.cfm?id=21&a...

My son ended up having his bilateral hydrocelectomy at 13months old. The surgery went great and by later that day my son back to 'normal' playing and eating. We didn't fill the prescription for the Tylenol with codeine. Instead my son did just fine with regular tylenol - he only needed it for less than two days. He now has two 1" scars on his abdomen (about the same place as a c-section scar in case you have one of those).

We met with the urologist last week and my son is scheduled for a bilateral hydrocelectomy on April 8th - though he has a pretty nasty cold right now so it may end up getting put off if he isn't healthy by then.

that's what they were doing with my son but since his hydroceles were so big he was sent to a urologist at 6 months. we tried to wait till 1 but since the fluid could come in and out of the sac he needed to get a surgery. i really hope your son's clear up on there own. the lack of information out there on this had me truely freaked out. i'm glad i found some mom's out there going through it too.

My son will be a year old next week. He has had hydrocele since day one. His doctor has been monitoring it all year in hopes it would go away on its own. If it is still there at his one year check-up he will be referred to a urologist. Since it is still there (though less than it was) I am assuming we will be making our first trip to a urologist soon. I find very little info on this on the internet and none of my friends have experienced this with their sons.

you got very lucky then. my son wound up getting two surgeries to correct his. for something they say is so common i'm having a lot of trouble finding anybody who has experienced this. his simple surgery turned into another sutgery and a night in the picu, followed by a week's hospital stay.

my son had a hydrocele. it developed when he was a few months old. we saw a pediatric uroligist. there was a chance that he woudl have had a simple surgery at 6 months, but it healed itself fine and we have had no problems since.
