Wait atleast six weeks to avoid confusion. If you see your child wanting to suck on her thumb I would give her a soother. It is easier to get the child to stop using a soother than to stop sucking her thumb.

Personally I would say never!!! I have not used a soother for my kids(they wouldnt take or keep it) however my oldest daughter(2yrs) sucks her thumb, and my youngest(11mo) uses nothing, but loves anything soft to rub on her face at nap and bed time! and she was crying alot more in the hosp, and is a mommies girl. my neice(20mo) uses a soother(from birth) and it is stuck in her mouth 24/7, so its a personal choice of the parent, some babies will learn to self sooth both my girls did. best of luck
