Um, I know this is probably going to sound very odd but does anyone else have a child or children that suck on their shirts?

My identical twins are 6 and they just started sucking on their shirts a few months ago from out of the blue. Am I alone?

I have a 6 1/2 yr old son that started doing that about 4 mos ago. He only does it at home in the evenings before bed & in the mornings when he wakes up. He says he doesnt know why he does it.

My 4 year old just started this a couple of months ago. At first I thought it was because her baby sister (10mths) is teething, but now I'm not so sure. It seems to relax her. I guess its kind of like thumb sucking, a soothing thing. The only thing she won't chew are her church dresses.

When I was a child, I would chew and suck on the collar of my shirts too. I think I was 7 or 8 when i finally grew out of it. I remember my mom always telling me to stop, but i was a habit. Just like babies chewing on their wash clothes in the tub, I think its the taste of the clean shirt thats so appealing. It was also the fact, that it was something that I had control over, because at that age, kids are so monitored by their parents, that that is something they can control when they do it. But I would say that they learned that clean clothing has a flavor to it too, so they enjoy how it taste. Sorry that I probably didnt help you with how to stop them, but that is why i did it. Good luck and relax, if you dont bring it to their attention that you dont like it, then they will stop on their own, but if you keep telling them to stop, it becomes a game to them. Kids love to aggrivate their parents, just think back to how you were when you were a child, and remember that your kids are going to do the same things you did to your parents! good luck!!

My husband and daughter both did around a year of age. I guess my husband was a lot worse though. Actually biting holes in them eventually. I think it was due to teething, but who knows at that age. Every once in a while I will see my daughter do it, but it seems to be out of frustration at this point and she is now 22 months. - Not sure with a 6 year old. Good Luck.

I do know that kids get 6 year old mollars, so maybe they are "teething." I work with children with autism, and the 8 year old I work with constantly chews on her shirt to the point that she puts holes in them and soak them completely wet. I'm not saying your children have autism, but it could just be a sensory issue; they want/need more oral stimulation. I would suggest giving them gum to chew on and see if that helps. Good luck!!!

My 7month old daughter chews or sucks on her clothes and everything else but shes also teething so she has everything in her mouth. At that age I have no idea. Maybe they just want attention

When I was around 5, I remember I used too as a nervous habit, I would suck at collar, it had the same affect as a Binky or pacifier. I grew out of it of course LOL

LOL I don't think it's food. Maybe they did see some other kid doing it. It's just so strange.

Umm... I don't recall my daughter doing that, she is 19 months. kids do crazy things, maybe there is food on their shirt, or they saw an older kid doing it...
