My daughter had her first two teeth at 4 mo. old. I started brushing them right away. When she was 1 yr old I took her to the dentist. She had 8 teeth at that time. Her dentist said that the amount of teeth didn't matter, rather the age. Im sure all dentists are different. He takes children starting at one. I use oral B brand tooth paste for babies. Its floride free and safe to swollow. Good Luck!!

I am a dental assistant and have two boys myself, a seven year old and eleven month old. I would brush his teeth at least twice a day, after breakfast and after his last bottle/meal at night. Do a good job brushing his teeth yourself and then let him try. It's good practice for him, and he will be more willing when he is older if he already has a routine. Either use an infant toothpaste or none at all. Many adult toothpastes have fluoride in them, and it's bad for babies/kids to swallow. Every dentist has a different opinion about when to take you little one in. I would call yours and see when they would like to see him. Even if your dentist doesn't think he needs to come in right away, it's OK to take your son in with you to your dental appointments to get him acquainted with the situation.

Not sure if this helps you at all but I had experience with a 13 month old boy and his favourite bath time game was brushing his 4 tiny teeth. However I'm not sure at what age he was introduced to it. It gave him the opportunity to learn how to do it, but it also seemed to help ease the pain of teething. I also met another child who wasnt given a toothbrush until he was about 2, and his parents had no end of trouble trying to get him to brush his teeth.

I know there are some great baby toothbrushs available, and even baby safe toothpaste (just be sure to keep the tube out of reach as a lot of kids have been known to try to eat it).

Good luck :)

We have pediatric dentists in our area, that's who I'm taking my daughter to rather than a general dentist. I've been told that they should go after turning 1.

i've read that you should schedule a dentist visit once your child has 8 teeth. my son is 14 months and is just starting to get his 4th tooth, he got the first at 11 months. you should probably go ahead and start brushing his teeth, just make sure you use baby toothpaste. the sooner you start the longer he'll have to get used to it being part of the bedtime routine and then it'll be habit when he's older!
