i think its okay at any age as long as you set a limit i put cartoons on for my son (treehouse) in the morning and after his afternoon nap for about an hour and we turn it off during meals. although he is more interested in his toys than the tv i still leave it on for him cuz you never know

I'm a work-at-home-mom and I have an 18-month-old. I try to limit his tv time to a few educational shows (ex: Diego, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Ni Hao Ki Lan, or Special Agent Oso) in the morning and a not-so-educational DVD (he LOVES the movies Cars, Finding Nemo, and Kung Fu Panda) when he eats his afternoon snack, after nap. Otherwise I try to have a few little musical CDs handy (songs for toddlers). He hates it when it's quiet. Fortunately, my son is a very independent player. If he wants something to do, I let him color (which he just started doing and is amazed with it), or we go outside and play (unless the weather doesn't permit... which are hard

I don't think there's anything wrong with TV. But, I do like the idea of keeping him entertained in other ways. I completely understand that sometimes parents have things they need to get done, and a good tv show is a great way to distract your kids for a short amount of time.. but not all day long.

My daughter loves Dora, Go Diego Go, and The mickey Mouse Clubhouse. All are very educational and fun to watch. They are interactive shows, which tries to get the kids involved.

My son only watches certain shows that are not on Nick Jr. A few shows on Disney and regular Nick he is allowed to watch: Handy Manny, Mickey Mouse Club House, Team Umi Zoomi, Chuggington, Dora, etc. He also likes Thomas and Friends DVDs. My son has no idea who Elmo is besides a character on his diaper. We don't get local channels with our new box.
Our TV is always on but most of the time it is just background noise. He will turn to watch a little bit here and there when playing with his toys. Other shows he will sit and watch intently.

my kids love playhouse disney, with mickey mouse clubhouse, but when they were really little they loved barney, and elmos world. as to when it is ok that is really up to you. no-one else can decide what your rules are regrding your child and tv.

Every Child is different, my daughter gets excited every time the theme song for law and order comes on. I guess because it is familiar to her. I watched it the whole time I was pregnant. She will watch it all the way through, but shows no interest in any other shows. Unless there is music and then she dances. I think sprout is appropriate, as well as basic channels such as PBS Kids.
