What can I do to get my 9 month old to eat foods that have more texture than a smooth puree? He can eat a banana if its mashed up but not if i give him small pieces. He starts to gag/choke and then often throws up because his gag reflex.

My son did the same thing. He will start when he is ready. Cheerios were great for my little guy starting out.

my daughter was the same way. you just have to be patient and slowly introduce foods. i agree with the mash potato idea. try making it a litlle chunkier over a few days. i found that although she didn't care for the stage 3 dinners she liked those gerber fruit puffs. they melt in her mouth and then she could chew the remamining mush and swallow it. she lived on those for awhile!! i'll be honest, she is still a very picky eater so i can't promise it will get better. just do what works for you.

you can try feeding him things like rice, grits, oatmeal, yorgurt, but a 9 month old is not ready for things that he has to chew. they don't know that they are suppose to chew it.

My son did the same thing. And being a good mom I stressed out. I was worried he was not getting the nutrition he needed from eating the same things and all of that. But, this too will pass. Do not worry or stress. My son is know 14 months and eats almost anything even dog food if I am not careful.

dont rush him...all babies start to desire foods of different textures at different times. I have a friend whos 8 month old still likes stage one foods over the 2nd stage but he likes bananas. Just introduce him to foods slowly and sometimes you might have to take to steps back and only one step forward. I have a 14 month old and he is my first. I was so by the books that i started to worry when he didnt want to eat any baby foods at 9 months. He loved table food..i thought he was to young and afraid he would choke. But he did fine. He always let me know when he was ready for something more. They tend to eat less and become more fussy try to introduce different foods then. I hope this helped a little. Good luck and trust me pretty soon he i will be eating you out of house and home!

This is actually really common. I let my infants (I used to work in an infant room at a child care center) play with their foor as an art activity, paint or food they will put it in their mouth. You little one may not be chewing his food. Have you tried those spoons with the fishing nets on them?

I used to make up songs about how to chew, and do the motions, and just start trying new foods my guy was eating meat and things at 6mth but he was eyeing the food and wouldnt eat the baby food ..you might even want to try mashed potatoes with a little chunk to them..One piece at a time helps just till they figure it out the amount of teeth they have or lack there of is something you can look at also..some of them are just picky..
