Do you ever experience someone of an advanced age giving you unwanted advice, or being down right rude to you because you are a young mother/father? I was with my fiance and my seven month old daughter at the grocery store, when this elderly woman told me that I was "too young" to have a child. This hasn't been the first time either. I have trouble reacting, I am just in shock that anyone would say things like that. Please share your stories and reactions.

I had people at work tell me I was too young to have a child, They're like how old are you now, 18? I'm like, "uhhhh 22," and even if I was 18 Id have been a wonderful mother at that age. Or when I was pregnant, people would give me the worst looks... or... a question that I really hated are you going to keep it? Why the heck would anybody ask that? That was the second question my doctor asked... right after "are you going to go through with the pregnancy?"

Early 20's is not too young to have children... back when our grandparents were having kids, they were having them around the ages of 18-20 and that was totally normal!

Don't take too much stock in it. Most people who do that stick their noses in everyone else's business. They are your kids, it's your life. They are just too nosey and think that they are entitled because they've reached their golden years. Just say 'oh ok' and move on.

Yes, and apparently the old woman is too old and senile to remember proper manners and keep her wrinkly old mouth shut.

...Sorry, I'm in a bad mood. :P

Oh I just take it as a compliment. I usually laugh and say I'm not as young as I look and continue on my way. People are going to judge others for everything; I don't let their closed mindedness interfere with my life. If you are happy with who you are and the life you've chosen, that is all that matters.

Yes I have had some similar experiences. Most poeple tell me I am too yung to have six kids. They say you look too young to even have one. I also hate when they tell you what to do. Like if I am at the store and we are getting ready to leave and the baby is hungry I will have her wait until we get home since I am BFing and it is easier. And since I dont really care to announce that to everyone I will just say yes she can wait. Or if you are shopping and my two year old is having a fit everyone will look at you like take that kid home or give her what she wants. I just wish poeple would mind their own business if I want their opinion I will ask for it.

yeah, It is definatly more common to have kids at our age these days. Its interesting thou as well.. because in cultures across the globe young girls are married at like 14-16 to start families at that age, and not only is it normal and accepted- its encouraged! I dont know why people think that young women arent ready to have children at our ages, I mean, What realy is the difference in a couple years. I can educate myself now just as well as I could then and be just as prepared to raise a child....

What's funny is that they were having children in their late teens and early twenties. Both sets of my grandparents and my fiance's grandparents were married out of high school and had their first children within the first two years.

wow. I think its incredibly rude and ignorant of someone to assume that they know your situation. to tell you you are too young to have a child is just crazy...how does she even know how old you are? I think that its just the difference in generations..how we are doing things alot earlier then older generation may have. Things are less rigid and we are more free to make our own decisions, and are educated at a younger age about sex and stuff, where it was all tight lipped for them. Im 22.. and I think its a great age to have a child. My friend has a 3 yr old and she is a brilliant mother. I really think we ought to be given more credit for our intellegence and abilities. stop the assumptions!
