This is our 3rd baby and we've never had a baby shower. I've had several people tell me that it is tacky to have one now, but we honestly have no baby items because my 2nd is 4yo and we didn't plan on more children. Is not appropriate to have a shower?

Eh, more like who can you find to throw it for you. If you can get someone else to rally your friends and family to your cause it looks less tacky than if you were to send out invitations yourself. Maybe the invitations could talk about helping out a mom who got a happy, but expensive and unplanned for, surprise! If you have someone you REALLY trust, you could always mention some of the things you really need so she can spread the word or even register you for things without your direct involvement, so you don't have to feel like you're being overly presumptuous or anything. If you're not as directly involved, you won't feel as tacky or embarrassed and can actually enjoy your "surprise" shower. Additionally, whatever you get will be as much of a surprise as the baby was in the first place-since someone else has handled your registry! But definitely charge a friend or relative with handling your PR, and let all of your baby shower guests believe that you are just a happy and grateful mom who is totally surprised and touched by the outpouring of support she's received from her loved ones. ;) Can you tell I was a Political Science major.
