Thumb sucking

[deleted account] ( 11 moms have responded )

My oldest is almost 7 and we have been trying to get her to stop sucking her thumb. She only does it at night when she sleeps, but she needs to stop doing it, and she knows. I'm just wondering if anyone else has been successful in breaking this habit in their older child.

You can buy a clear nail varnish, people use it to stop biting there nails. It tastes really, really bad and it stopped me from sucking my thumb as a kid. Its not at all harmful.

LOL, it's okay. She knows that she doesn't need to do it. We have talked about it a lot and she does want to stop, she says "Mommy, its just so hard! I just want to do it" But the good thing is that it's only when she's sleeping at night.

My mom did EVERYTHING possible to get me to stop sucking my fingers. I ended up sucking them until I was 16 resulting in tons of dental issues. I had braces for 6 years. It wasn't until I had a metal mouth piece put in which took up sooo much room, did I actually stop.
Things she tried.... taping gloves to my hands, putting hot sauce-soap-gross nail polish anything that was gross, taping my fingers together, embarrassing me if it happened in public. Nothing worked for me, but they might for your daughter. Maybe offer some kind of reward if she can go a certain amount of night without. Its sooo hard to get kids to stop, it's like a security blanket. Good luck and hopefully I didn't bum you out....

The only reason I wouldn't advise the glove thing is because a few people have told me that it's led to sucking on blankets but may not be the case with your daughter... jus a fyi

She was 5 at the time and it took 2 or 3 nights.. But I know of other mothers that did this when there kids were a bit older than yours and it still worked... But make sure you do both even if she only sucks the one because she will more likely try to switch thumbs and by doing both it will nip it in the bud right away.

I used the lemon juice that you can get in the squeeze bottle and just put some on a cotton ball and then rubbed it on her thumb. It's not harmful to kids as its classed as a food, but they don't like the taste of it and therefor wont suck on their thumb. It worked for getting my niece to stop sucking her thumb.
