Does anyone have a labour technique that worked for them? I am a week over due tomorrow, not alot really, but getting a bit frustrated and don't want to be medically induced as I have heard it makes labour longer and more intense!

Thanks

I went into labor two weeks early, but the day I went into labor I had done ALOT of walking. My boyfriend and I also happened to have "relations" if you know what I mean. it wasnt really all that uncomfortable, but they say it makes your water break, mine broke 3 hours later. Once I got to the hospital they did give potosin, and when I had that I NEEDED an epidural. They also say spicey food, or a laxitive... Good luck!

If you are still in need of how to put yourself into labor, I am a nurse and know a few at home suggestions. Nipple stimulation causes contractions - stimulate (best with a breastpump) for fifteen minutes every other hour - this typically helps dilate. Also, drinking red raspberry leaf tea (three to four pouches in every cup - it's very strong) strengenthens braxton hicks and helps move the baby down, which also causes dilation. Evening primrose oil geltabs (available at your local health store, GNC, for example) inserted into the vagina and pressed up against the cervix help to soften the cervix and are a precursor to prostaglandins, which also cause mild contractions. Having unprotected sex also helps induce contractions and soften the cervix because of the prostaglandins in sperm. Spicy foods have been known to induce labor, but this is not the best option because something with the ingredients blocks the receptors for endorphins, your body's natural pain killers, so this can make labor more painful. Sitting in a warm bath helps relax the pelvic muscles, but DO NOT do this if your water has broken because of risk of infection for you and the baby. Going walking, while uncomfortable and sometimes painful, helps move the baby down, which also causes dilation. If this is yourf firstr child, these things may not help things move as fast as you like, but they are known to help in a lot of cases. These are not surefire ways to go into labor, they can put you closer, but if you are not ready to go, they won't work. Also, castor oil (it's nasty, so dilute it in a cup of juice) can help - it's a laxitive so you will poop a lot before you go to the hospital, but pooping on the table is embarrassing anyway - it causes cramping in the abdomen, and if you are close to going into labor, it will put you into labor, but taking it too early will just make you poop - no labor. When your contractions are five minutes apart, you are supposed to call the doctor to let them know you are coming in. Best of luck. Hope everything works out for you, and BTW, I am not prescribing these as medical treatments - these are well known tips that your doctor can tell you and are readily available on the internet, so I cannot be held liable if anything does not work or in the small chance that any of these cause complications.

did you have your doctor strip the membranes? if not i would see if they'll do that, the doctor striped mine and the next day my little guy was born. it's natural and it doesn't involve drugs or anything.

Have sex :) Only way I know that could help start labor. Pitocin is NOT THAT BAD. My water broke, but my contractions didn't come together. I was hesitant because I had heard all of these horror stories. I finally let them give it to me and I had my baby within 3 hours and NO DRUGS! My only complaint is that the contractions do peak faster so (if you plan on going natural) you have to stay ahead of them...meaning you have to breathe fast from the start of the contraction. If you have to be induced watch your nurse closely and make sure she knows you would like her to gradually increase the dose...not do it all at once :) Good luck!

I ate spicy foods and have sex. yes I know that it isn't the most comfortable time to think about fun in the bed, but it worked for me with my last 2 deliveries

I tried sex, walking, I drank pineapple juice, exercise, squats, and my husband even drove me to the top of the mountain, none of that worked for me, I had to get induced, I couldn't tell you if its worse then going into labor on your own b/c this was my first child but it sure was a lot of pain!

My doctor suggested black cohosh to me, you can get it in the health food stores. About 8 hours after I took it, I went to the hospital to have my little guy. Raspberry tea also works, but not as fast. Also, walking! But don't wear yourself out, you're going to need energy to push that baby out :)

Both pregnancies I had went into labor early. With my daughter I walked every where, but right before I went into labor I had rough sex. I know it sounds weird but it helps. With my twins I walked up three flights of stairs.

I tried walking, eating spicy foods, sex you name it we did it--BUT the only thing that I found to work was drinking castor Oil. (I did this with both of my boys--within no more then 2 days I had them) It idoesn't taste good at all--I just drank a little ---my nurse told me that it can help but your body HAS to be ready to go into labor--I was a 3 when I did this--so that did it. hahaha

My husband and I had sex and I started having contractions that night. I was only 35 weeks at the time. A man's sperm can send you into labor! Worth a try!

LOL some of these sound very promising. I will tell you this with my first child i tried everything. SHe was due on the 2nd of nov and no luck. I tried walking.... walked so much that i pulled a growing muscle tried the whole walk on an incline for an hour no help sore legs. I tried sex ... it was fun lots of fun but still no help. I even tried the castor oil in a milkshake ( yes yes i know some moms are shaking their heads at me right now) to take away the flavor... could not swallow it tasted like cheap chapstick melted down coated my mouth. Even to this day just the thought of the texture makes me sick. lets see tried walking up 5 flights of stairs 4 times got some pretty strong contractions but still no baby.I craved spicy foods my entire pregnancy no help their either. My dr finally decided to strip membranes was the most painful experince ever. For those of you who do not know... dr puts hand up their and SEPARATES membrane of sac from the wall, this still no help. Next morning when he stripped membranes for the 2nd time he pulled part of the plug out. WOW i wanted kill !!!! 20 1/2 hours of being dialated to a 3 i finally gave in for pectocin iv drip. And i will tell you this 4 hours later i had an epidural and 3 hours after that i gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl. I swear the pectocin helped me and so did epidural. I plan on having both for my third child due on nov 16th if she has not come sooner. I hope this helps and good luck with a happy healthy and safe delivery of your baby momma.

I went into labor within hours of having sex both times, but we had been doing it regularly for pretty much my whole pregnancy, so maybe just a coincidence. lol I feel obligated to recommend a foot massage (and if you can get a reflexology book, do it!) because my mom was reading up on that stuff at the time I went into labor with my first and she pinpointed the nerves in my feet about an hour after I started having contractions. I ended up being in labour for 7 hours total (one of which I slept, three hours before she was born!), and only 10 minutes of pushing for my first child, a whopping 8lb 6oz baby girl! Can't say for my son bc he was breech/preemie and I had to have a Csection, but if I had it to do again, foot massage would be my choice! Think about it, the baby books say NOT to get foot rubs before 36 weeks, so there must be something to it!

the baby decides when he/she wants to come, although many of the previously listed things may work for one person doesnt always work for everyone. GOOD LUCK. First babies are usually the worst, and have the longest of labors.

When I went to the doctor 3 weeks before I was due, I had her strip my membranes. I also walked a lot. It must have helped because I went into labor the following week. You know, they also say having sex helps induce labor... you should try it! Good luck!

I got my labor going this last time, (my youngest is two weks old), but going to the mall and walking at a pretty quick pace, then I eat a very, very spicy burrito, and walked some more. I was at the hospital that night and had her a 9:01 am the next day.

On my due date my Dr stripped my membraines... basically the separate the sack from your uterus (I believe). It was uncomfortable while she did it, but I went into labor 4 hours later. My good friend had it done and went into labor 2 hours later.

[deleted account]

well for me i was in early labor for a week, then one morning before my husband went to work we had some abnormally fantastic sex...an hour later we were on our way to the hospital and our daughter was born later that night....so that old wives tale worked for us!

You think I would be happy about moving the process along but I had plans that weekend for my step children and ended up missing them. I was so happy and bummed at the same time!!

For may daughter I took Castrol oil in juice about 2 tablespoons you can take more but I only took 2 and after 5 hours I was in labor the easiest labor I had.

[deleted account]

I can honestly say that I have had two babies, the 1st I went into labor...and for me sex helped out a ton! 3x in 1 day and boom labor came. My 2nd I had to be induced due to medical issues, but it was a breeze! I would take an induction anyday, so dont be afraid of that:)

I tried everything under the sun and nothing worked. I really think the baby will come exactly when it is ready. I ended up having contractions on and off for two and a half days but then I had a very easy delivery. I think maybe my body was able to slowly get where it needed to be so everything went smoothly. There is a Dr. in my town who has a bad track record for labors ending in c-sections and long labors for her patients. I think this is because she "scrapes the membranes" in an attempt to get the water to break and get labor started. The water almost always breaks because the membranes are not strong enough to hold it back, but in most of the cases, the baby wasn't ready yet and the patients don't progress very quickly so they end up having to get Pitocin to speed things up, antibiotics to protect the baby when the water has been broken for 18 hours, and in a lot of cases C-sections. Anyway, as antsy as I know you are to have your little babe, just let nature take its course! :) If you do end up having to get induced, ask your doctor about Cervadil. I have heard that it is a very natural way to induce labor and doesn't have the painful effects of Pitocin!

i had sex from 37 weeks onwards like everyday and it didnt work for me and then the day before i went into labour i did some relexology which a midwive should be able to show u how to do and the next day i woke up and i was in early labour and a few hours later i started getting contractions reguarly 5 mins apart for 17 hours. i gave birth at 39 weeks 5 days. try everything people have said, if ur ready to give birth and bubby is ready to come out these things will work for u! good luck and the labour, not as bad as what people say.. an amazing experience.

Do whatever possible to not have an induction! Labor is worse and usually leads to a c-section! Sex is usually the best solution. After sex just stay laying in bed and elevate your pelvis with a pillow...law of gravity keeps the semen inside and has time to work on thinning your cervix. I tried all other remedies personally and this one was the best one....sex may not be the greatest right now, but it truly may work for you! Don't just stop trying with one shot though...if you can stand it go for a few rounds (quickies are equivalent) Good luck!

I tried Everything, sex every day for 3 weeks, walking just stretch your skin more. I had a hole bottel of casteroi (a last resort)l in one day, very bad stomach cramps and diarhee, contractions started and then stopped. I was induced (14 days over) she was just so much bigger than she would have been at the due date. Next time i'll get induced at 39 weeks. Good luck, hope you find good advice.
