Trying to get my baby to sleep without making him CIO, but sometimes nothing works =S

My youngest (now 6 mo. old) is usually pretty good about going to sleep. sometimes he will fuss and cry for just a couple mins ( more than 2-3 mins if at all) and fall asleep soundly, and happy as a clam when he wakes up. However, the last few days off and on--more so at nighttime--he will kick and scream and cry but nothing I do will console him. I have nursed, him, checked his diaper, and started thinking he is teething or something, but as soon as he is picked up he's fine. Yet, if I try to sit down and hold him he will squirm and get fussy; rubbing his eyes and stuff. He doesn't like me rocking him to sleep because all he does is try to wiggle away from me when I do so then I just put him back in bed only for him to throw a massive fit.

I have even tried lavender baths, massages, patting, rubbing, singing...sometimes it works but on days like today it didn't do squat. The last thing I could think of to do was to just let him cry it out. I feel terrible doing that (didn't like it with my oldest either,) and he just gives me that pouty face that could stop traffic that makes me feel so horrible for leaving him to cry, but idk what else to do. I am beyond exhausted, and I deliver newspapers so I have to go to bed early (like 9 pm without a mid-day nap) and wake up by around 2:30 am so staying up with him is out of the question. Heck if I could get my husband to help out with that, but that's another issue entirely...

I'm just wondering if anyone else has gone through this, and what you did to try and fix it. Is there something else I could I doing something wrong?? Any advice is great, but please...PLEASE I don't want to hear any preaching about the whole CIO issue. I don't want this to turn into a cat fight. I just want opinions. Thank you.

My son went through a few nights of that a bit ago. It turned out that he had two ear infections. He had no signs of one, no fever, not tugging on his lobes or anything. I think that if you have tried everything you can think of, safest thing to do is just take him to his pediatrician and have him checked out.
