under weight...

My son recently just turned one and we went to his one year check up. He was born at a healthy 9.2 lbs and since then has gained weight but not enough. He recently only weighs 19lbs and is only in the 5th percentile for his age group but for height he is in the 90th percentile.. so I was just wondering if there are any parents in this position and maybe if anyone has any tips to get some extra weight on him or at least maintain his weight and not let him go down anymore percentiles.

Thanks, Chantel

I agree with Shannon. As long as he's developing fine, there should be nothing to worry about. My daugther is in the lower end of the weight class, she's 4 almost 5 and weighs 39lbs but is 44 inches tall. I'm so happy her dad took her into the dr's office so they could see that she is built exactly like him. Tall and thin. Could that be the same scenario with your family? Maybe he's just built like you or his dad? I don't think 19lbs at 1 is something to be too concerned about. That seems pretty typical to me. If I were you, I'd only start to worry if he looses weight. Maybe you could increase healthy snacks throughout the day to help with gaining weight?

I have had the same problems with my daughter. She was 5lb 130z at birth and now weighs 18lb 9oz at a year old. The doctors reccomended a high fat diet for her and i refused as their bodies cant take it. Hell level out in his own time, try not to worry too much! Louise

Thank you everyone. The doctor just said it would be a concern if he didn't continue to gain weight. He eats all day! And he eats almost everything we give him. He's developmentaly where he should be so now that I've had a little feed back from other parents I feel a lot better!

My son is 4 years old and is 36lbs and 3'7. He underweight for his height also. Infact he went to the doctors not to long ago and the doctor noticed he hasn't really gained weight in 1 1/2 years. Kinda scarey. But as long as he is active and acts normal, my doctor said he's fine. As for getting him to maintain or gain weight, I let my son snack when he asked (not that it's helped LOL) but he's a pretty healthy eater. Though he loves popcorn and chocolate he will eat alot of celery with ranch and any fruit under the sun!

Hi Chantel,
Does the Dr say this is a concern? My son only weighed 20 lbs at 1 and was also in the 90th percentile for height. Basically as long as development is consistant and appetite is good I don't think u really need to worry yet. My pediatrician suggested "shakes" for my son. I bought carnation instant breakfast shakes. He refused to drink them but u may have better luck. My son looks healthy, has a good appetite, and is great developmentally so I was never overly concerned. He is now 2 and still only weighs 28 lbs and is still in the 75th percentile for height. Good luck with everything and as long as he is healthy try not to worry to much. :0)
