I have bee. Married 10 years and never been on vacation. I finally have the opportunity to visit my cousin in Hawaii. However I have an 9 yr old and a 4 month old...I plan on brining the it selfish or bad to leave my 9 year old behind? I am trying to save money, the baby is free and my 9 yr old would be about $400 extra. Plus she's been bad in school... Help I don't know what to do!

In my opinion yes it would be selfish. It would bring more distance to your relationship with her. An extra 400 is not bad. That is something you can put a little away each month and be able to afford. Also if the 9 yr old is doing bad in school what a good way to find some hands on educational things for her. My son was about 9 yrs old when we went to Hawaii. We visited Pearl Harbor and what an experience for him to see hands on what he will learn in the history makes learning SO much more fun when you have seen first hand. It does not have to be Pearl Harbor that you do....I am not sure what island you will be on and I know island hopping is very expensive. Hawaii offers SO many educational things no matter what island you are on.

My suggestion to you is to start a tradition of doing a family vacation yearly. Vacations don't have to be far away costing lots of money. Vacations can be a few hours from home or the next state over from you. Again there are SO many educational things that one can find no matter where you go that I think helps with encouraging children to learn and make learning fun. Doing family vacations can also help with family communication.
