I've been told you can't use fabric softener on clothes for young babies. At what age is it safe to introduce it?

Around 12 mos is when I introduced it. Ask your pediatrician. They do sell baby fabric softeners that are supposed to be more gentle for their skin..

I was never told that but I am not able to use fabric softener for my son because it irrates his skin. I would say to ask your babies dr and then make your decision.

i was told that you're not suppoesed to use it because baby clothes have a fire retardent in their material and fabic softener can wash this away - i believe that once you are no longer buying clothes in the baby dept and are moving to the childrens section is when it is no longer in the clothing

I've used it from the time that I started buying stuff for my son when I was pregnant. I used Dreft detergent, but I used the non-fragrant fabric softener.

I've always used fabric softener in my laundry even for my newborns (I have four kids), I've never used special detergent either. Unless your child had sesative skin I don't think you have to worry about it. But if you're concerned call your baby's doctor and ask, that's what they're there for!
