I was told not to give them water until 6 months because they get all the water they need from making the formula with water. I don't know how that applies to breast fed babies, but that's what I was told. I didn't give my daughter water until she was 6 months old and I handed her her first sippy cup. She's almost 2 now and a very active healthy little girl. We now give her water in between her milk cups.

Don't start giving them water until you start them on solid foods. Water can actually make a baby's blood thinner. Like others have said, small sips are ok, but no more than a few ounces.

Hi, I think its ok to give your baby water, mine is 4 months too and pediatrician told me its time to give him sips of pure water and juice dissolved with water.

"In general, it's not a good idea to give your baby water until he's about 6 months old. Until then, he'll get all the hydration he needs from breast milk or formula, even in hot weather.

Giving a baby younger than 6 months old too much water can interfere with his body's ability to absorb the nutrients in breast milk or formula. It can also cause his tummy to feel full, which curbs his desire to feed. (While small sips of water probably won't hurt your baby, it's best to check with his doctor beforehand during those first six months.)"

I got this from BabyCenter.com.. I think I didn't give my daughter juice or water until she was sitting up and able to eat snacks like Cheerios and Puffs.

I don't see what it would hurt. My son is almost 5 months old and his has been drinking apple juice that is watered down for about a month. So I can't imagine water is much different
