Went for an ultrasound at 7 weeks and it showed I'm only 5 weeks. Is this possible?

I had my LMP on July 4th, took a pregnancy test on July 31st and it was a faint positive. Went to doctor at 7 weeks 5 days and they did an ultrasound. Ultrasound showed a fetal pole and yolk sack but no heartbeat and baby was only measuring 5 weeks 5 days. How is it possible that I am 2 weeks off when I took a test 4 weeks ago! The doctor wants me to come back in 2 weeks to do another ultrasound but it didn't sound very promising.

I took a preganacy test at exactly the time I was due on and found out I was pregnant. That would have made me around 3 to 4 weeks pregnant. I didn't have a scan until I was 20 weeks but I did have a heart beat scan at 12 weeks. Other than that all I had was the dr giving me a external check. It might not be why you think it is. Our bodies work in mysterious ways so it could be that the size is making it slightly out. X x

I experienced something similar in my second pregnancy, I attended an early scan which I should have been 9 weeks pregnant however the scan showed the pregnancy had stopped developing at 5 weeks and 6 days, they planned an ultrasound for the following 2 weeks to check for any further development incase my dates were wrong but I already knew something was wrong, I started bleeding the same day and miscarried the following week, I am sorry if this upsets you but it doesn't always have an happy ending and usually your dates are pretty accurate on the bright side I then went on to have a healthy pregnancy and have my son who wouldn't be here today if I had of had a successful pregnancy, I hope your dates were wrong but maybe prepare yourself in case it is bad news xx

Thank you everyone. I know my dates aren't wrong so I am preparing myself for the worst. I am still hoping that maybe I just ovulated late and they could be wrong by a few days also but whatever the outcome I am alright with it.

The same happened to me prior to my miscarriage. Everything was considered "normal" for 5 weeks, but I knew good and well I should have been closer to 8 weeks. Around 9 weeks I started bleeding and after two HCG tests, and another ultrasound, it was finally confirmed that I'd lost the pregnancy.

What does a pregnancy test say now? Are you getting a brighter/darker line? Or is it still faint?

Sorry to hear Katy. I had a similar story. I didnt think I could get pregnant first of all, I've been unprotected with my long term boyfriends the 3 years before last, but only last year when I was 25 got pregnant. I found out early at 3 weeks and 4 days with a first response test. I was nervous but excited and confused, I read places that if you test pos early that it's a good sign that it's stuck in there good. But that wasn't the case with me. I was supposed to have my 1st prenantal at 7 wks but I went on a few trips instead and went to my first pre natal at 9 wks 1 day LMP. The doctors couldnt find a heartbeat, so they scheduled me in 2 hours later for an ultra sound. The U/S showed nothing but an empty sac and was only measuring at 6 wks 4 days, US tech told me the doc would want to talk with me, I asked you would be able to see something by then and she agreed. The doc told me that I was wither only 6 w 4 d or miscarrying with a non viable pregnancy. They tested my hormone levels for about a week, it went from 10,000 to 8,000. so they gave pills to help start the miscarriage along. I know how hard it is, but there is always hope. I miscarried in the beginning of Dec and this month I found out I'm pregnant again, I have my first pre natal tmw at 7 wks 3 days, my fingers are crossed. Good luck to you in conceiveing again soon! ♥

I myself thought that i couldn't get a pregnancy test that was positive at a week pregnant but I did. I was only a week or some few odd days when I took a test and it barely showe up and I was pregnant for sure. So we alway went to dra and at 15 weeks and after 3 sonograms I fell and went to the ER Nd doing out I was pregnant with twins!!! That's why my test showed up so fast. Goo luck girl!

Re-reading your original post and I would like to clarify that when I had my miscarriage, there was no heartbeat AND no fetal pole.

Hi Katy I have been for a scan this morning after a suspected ectopic pregnancy

I wasn't sure how far along I should be I got my first positive test on 7th August.

They saying of the scan I'm 5 weeks plus. I have a yolk sak and fetal pole but couldnt see a heart beat. she said I'm to early to hear or see it and not to worry it can be perfectly normal. I have to ring early pregnancy unit in the morning to book in for another scan which will be on 1-2 weeks time! Please let me know how you get on and I will too! I got my fingers crossed for you and me! Xx

My cousin is having that problem. She went in and they told her that her due date was Christmas, then she went back and they told her January, then about three weeks ago they changed it to February. I think it just all depend on your body. Maybe you got a false reading the first time, then just happened to get pregnant right after. Never know.

I read alot of magazine. One woman had this but when she went back for her 12wk scan, where they had taken off 2wks from the mother's calculations, they had got it wrong and added 2wks from her calculations, meaning the mother's calculations were right.

Another woman was expecting non identical twins and had this happen. It turns out one twin had developed slightly later than the other so when they did an early scan, the smaller twin showed up but at a later scan, both twins showed up at the mothers calculations.

Regarding what somebody said about tests not working until 4wks, I was 3wks from my LMP (1wk after estimated conception) when I found out with my last baby and had a scan at 6wks (to my calculations) and I was correct.

The doctor wouldn't let me wait a week she said I had to wait 2 weeks minimum and I'm actually waiting almost 3 because I was seen last monday and my appt isn't til the 13th. The doctor said there was nothing to worry about but I know its not right. Still trying to stay optimistic, almost one week later and still no bleeding, spotting or cramps

I'm very very sorry. I've had this happen a few times and been on TTC boards more than my fair share. I've never seen this have a happy ending. Sounds like a missed miscarriage. I'd INSIST on an US in a week at the latest. If it's one of those amazing pregnancies, but the positive test four weeks ago makes it even less likely, they'll be a week of development! Why wait 2 weeks for a miscarriage to start or to get your answer when a week is much less painful emotionally. Again I'm so sorry. I'd start preparing myself. Biggest hugs in the world.

L&D nurse here. The best time to determine dates is 18 weeks. At this time they measure the length of the femur. After that time genetics kicks in as well as other factors like maternal diet, gestational diabetes and others. A late in pregnancy US is very unreliable for dates, a bit better for fetal weight. However, even an 8 lb baby can be 36 weeks if mom is diabetic. In your case you may be fewer wks than you thought or it could be a blighted ovum. This is an ovum that failed to develop properly and will result in a miscarriage. I hope that your dates are off. If your dates are off your triple screen test may test positive for downs, however, it is a FALSE positive if you're not between 15 & 18 weeks. So many things to consider. Don't stress it, just give it a few more weeks. Wishing you the very best.

With my first son we went in for the ultrasound and were told he was around 6 weeks. A month later we went for our next ultrasound and he said he was actually 13 weeks. Sometimes they can't get a good reading on the first visit if it's early! The Dr changed my older sons due date 5 times, he went from June 16th to May 26th (when he was born). Same with our second son, Drs aren't always right!!

Oh! I know for sure I miscarried because I had blood drawn every other day until my hcg levels dropped to practicality undetectable.

I know exactly when I conceived. I had a confirmed miscarriage, and waited until I was examined by my obgyn before having sex. 2 weeks after we resumed relations, I had a positive home pregnancy test.

Its still is really hard to see a heartbeat at that early of a pg. And as for the "weeks" along, its just a estimate. They go off of how big the "baby" is. I was pg with my first and I had three dif due dates. Each time I had an ultrasound the baby went through a growth spurt or decided not to grow in that short of time. Long story short, I ended up having two weeks earlier than my second due date. lol. So just relax as much as possible hun.

On the ultrasound it goes by the size and development of the fetus, so its probably right. I never liked that they did it by LMP cause I always knew when I got pregnant. And yes, it is possible that after a few days your body was already producing the pregnancy hormones, so yes its not unheard of that your test came up pos

A babies heart starts beating around 35 days of gestation. If there was no heart beat, then most likely you were not fertilized 7 weeks ago.

I found out I was pregnant about a month after my LMP... but according to the doctors I should be 4months but if that's the case I was pregnant while on my LMP and it was a normal 6-7 days... So I take it they really dnt know til they do an ultrasound... And if it's anything before 6wks they really dnt know because they can barely (sometimes) hear a heartbeat that early.....

It is possible I found out I was pregnant I ended up in hospital and they told me that I was around about 13 weeks pregnant then 3 weeks later I had gone for an ultrasound and it only confided I was 13 week pregnant 3 week after the doctor had told me that but I had my son 3 week earlier than my due date .... It just a guess really they not always right

The dr. told me when I was pregnant that I was 7 weeks after an ultrasound I was actually 5 weeks 5 days which ended up being 3 days after i had sex and a week and a half before ovulation and sex again. It is possible and the drs actually told me that they can guess within a week of conception.

I though u had to be at least 4 weeks before it showed up on a test, but it depends on the pregnancy hormone in ur wee. Yours could be super strong. They maybe wrong.

Ya, they said that maybe I ovulated really late but that wouldn't explain how I had a positive pregnancy test on the 31st. I couldn't have a positive test only days after conceiving right?

I have know someone think they r 10 weeks and only be 6. I've only ever been a few days out so I don't know how they can put u back 2 weeks if they go by ur LMP.
