We invited a lot of families to our daughter's first birthday party. So, I found a brownie recipe online and I made brownie boxes for each family to take home and bake together. Basically it was like those cookie gift jars that you add eggs and oil to. It went over very well, and was something different for parents and kids to enjoy together.

My oldest was a flag day baby so I went with the flag theme... but I agree with keeping it simple... they will remember nothing.

I bought some sand pails and shovels and filled them with age apropriate things. Crayons, colouring books, bubbles, fruit snacks, juice boxes, bath toys, toy cars ( that was the theme) etc. For some of the younfer babies I just put socks, bibs, rattles, babyfood etc.

We did a balloon theme for my 2yo for his first birthday. I rented a helium tank and filled the house with balloons. I set out stickers on a table so older kids could put stickers on their balloons. I gave out favor bags with stickers and thing of bubbles. Then each child got to take home a balloon or two.

The photo cd would obviously be more for the parents, but the music cd would be great for babies/young children.

We did a semi-sports theme for my oldest son (his first word was ball, he absolutely loved any ball). So we gave all the kids a ball as a party favor.

For my younger son we got a bubble maker so the kids could play in the bubbles and gave all the kids bubble solutions.

My friends made a cd with pictures from the baby's first year as a party favor. I thought it was really sweet. The cover of the cd was a picture of him. It seemed like a relatively easy thing to do if you have pictures on your computer of your little one. Another thing you could do is have music kiddie music at the party and then hand out a copy of the playlist you used.

Just some small simple things should be fine. Most babies/toddlers eat animal crackers, play with bubbles, balls, can wear sunglasses since summer is here, those tiny books, divide a pack of those foam letters that stick to the bathtub sides...good luck
