I have had a pen pal since grade 5. I am now 29 years old, and we still keep contact. I don't see an issue with pen pals as long as they are age appropriate and your child understands that they need to remember to keep themselves safe. I know online isn't the safest place to find a pen pal, but you as a parent have the right to screen your child's future pen pals. If the child will be using the internet for writing then you must be strict in the rules for writing to strangers. My 10 year old daughter also has a pen pal in BC and they get along great. I got to know the parents and we made a list of rules for the girls to follow. After a few months we even let them chat via skype. As long as you continue to monitor your child's conversations and letters there is no need for alarm when it comes to pen pals. Hope this helps.

Thanks Atasha, i see alot of mum looking for pen pals for there kids and my son is very shy and doesnt make friends easily so i thought maybe a pen pal would help, and it would give him a life long friend. I would only let him have one if i screened the letters first knowing what kind of sick people are out there i wouldnt allow him near them unless i screened them. I was asking as my husband doesnt think its a good idea and i get where he is coming from, so i wanted to see if anyone else had the same worries at first as we do.
