What does it mean if my son called my friend dad?

am a single mother to my two year old son. My ex isn't around at all so we don't use the word dad at all around my son. When he meets people he calls them their name or "guys" male or female. Recently I went to cali to visit my brother. He introduced his friend to my son and I because he and my brother wanted to hangout. His name is TJ. For some reason my son called him dad and daddy. He hasn't ever done that before. I found it really odd. TJ and I do have chemistry and get along great, not to mention he is easy on the eyes. Anyone have any clue on why my son called him dad? He doesn't know his dad so it's not that he could look like him. They don't look a like either. My brother's girlfriend said maybe he just feels it? I asked my parents and they said it's not possible he doesn't know that word. Thank you to anyone who replies.

That is good that you haven't taught him that word.I am a single parent and I don't use the word around my son either. There was a time where he started making associations and he started calling pretty much every man he was near daddy. It didn't matter if they were black or white. He called multiple perfect strangers daddy, and you can imagine how uncomfortable those men felt and how horrible I felt.It was so sad,and I fell into a deep depression after he started doing that, because I know he was just looking for someone to call dad.My guess is that your two year old mainly spends time with women at daycare and family,so if he already knows that your brother is uncle or your dad is grandpa etc he would be least likely to call them dad, because he knows that neither are his dad.He is just trying to figure out who his dad is.

My husband and I are long distance due to his work and my daughter saw a pic of him and called him by his first name. I think your child probably just picked it up from cartoons. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

He has called me by my first name. I knew it was from him hearing other people call me that.

Not weird really. It's actually totally normal. And it's also normal that he may start calling you by your first name at some stage. it is just a phase.

I was thinking his cartoons. Still really odd to me. Maybe more so that I'm not used to him saying dad at all. Kinda like calling your mother by her first name, very weird.

I call real dad, Dan and my step dad, papa. He calls him papa so we all use that name to refer to him. We NEVER have used to word dad or daddy in our house. We banned it when my son was two months old. That's why it was odd to me when he called him that.

It probably didn't mean anything. At that age, kids categorise all males together and all females together. It is perfectly normal for them to call any male dad. My friends daughter used to call me mum when I babysat her, because as far as she could tell, I was a female who had control over her bottle of milk!!

And of course he knows that word. He's heard you call your dad "dad" hasn't he?
