Each preschool is different as to what they want the parents to do that first day. I would talk with the preschool director or teachers and find out. Some preschools have the parents stay that first day. This is a way for the preschool to show the parents what their daily schedule will be like. It also gives the parents a chance to meet each other and get to know the kids in the preschool class.

Other preschools have the 1st day be a normal day. Usually their is a routine in drop offs and pick ups. For example when dropping off some preschools have aids that come outside and get the kids and bring them into the classroom. Other preschools have the parents bring their kids in, have the kids hang up their coats and schoolbags, and check in (there are various ways of doing this). Pick up is the same....some bring the kids outside to the parents where as others have the parents come inside, but wait in the hallway for the child to be dismissed to you. Some preschools the child has a mailbox where they put their papers and such that they want to the child to collect at the end of the day.

You are expected to get the child cleaned and dressed and then drop them off at pre-school. Pre-school is essentially glorified day care, actual learning is minimal.
