What Is a "Single Mom"?

[deleted account] ( 8 moms have responded )

I'm just curious what everyone else considers to be a single mom? Is it a women who has a child and does everything without the help of the father? Is it a woman who is just the primary caregiver but the father has the child on weekends or whenever? I personally believe a single mom is someone that does everything by themselves with no help.

If you are living with that boyfriend (it is a solid, lasting relationship) and he is contributing to the household, then no, not really. For example, I remarried, so I don't consider myself a single parent. I was a single parent after my previous marriage failed, however, until my current husband and I moved in together.

I consider myself a single mother even though his dad is in his life. I'm a single woman with a child that lives with me and depends on me. I also think that if the mother is in a different relationship. Because I could date someone for months and I won't let him meet my child until I know it's going somewhere and don't expect him to care for my child unless we're married Or ssomething.

Any Mother who doesn't live with a partner to assist with day-to-day child rearing.

I am a single mom :( I do everything on my own 24/7...Dad's not in her life, I don't date, and no grandparents to take my kid sometimes. I work and go to school full time as well...That is a single mom in my opinion. But that doesn't mean its any easier if someone is in a relationship or have their kid half time. Relationships alone are hard enough let alone raising kids in the mix. As long as you raise your kids to the best of your ability that's all that matters.

I'm the same as Jodi. I was single for 5 years after my first marriage broke down. I did shared care with the boys but I supported them when they were with me. I had to work full time to be able to pay for everything.
I dated during that time but didn't live with anyone so had no help with my bills until my current husband moved in.

Ok Michelle. And Jodi it was just a question that needed a single simple answer. So a single mother has nothing to do with who's taking care of the child and so on but only means a mother thats single? So if me and my child's father breakup and I go out and get a boyfriend then I'm not a single mother?

What Michelle said. A single mother is a mother not in a relationship. Why is it so important to you that it should only be someone who does everything on their own with no help? Does that means someone who receives child support is not a single mother? A woman who has their child every weekday, but dad has them every other weekend could be doing it just as tough as a mother who has them all the time. After all, it isn't a competition, right?

I think it's a Mother that isn't in a relationship. You are single and a Mother.
