Hi Moms! I am new to this website. I googled what to do if my babies ear piercing is infected and got my answer here! Thank u very much everyone (except the criticizers!) I got my daughters ears done at the mall when she was 8 months old. She is now almost 10 months and today i just noticed that her left one looks a little infected...

oh the poor thing, i hate getting piercings infected (i have many lol, and depending on the jewelry i wear i can get bad reactions)
if it is very infected, do NOT take it out (permanently). the surface will close up, but if you didn't kill the infection before hand, the puss will have no where to go, causing even more swelling and quite a bit of pain. you can switch the earring tho, maybe to a sleeper hoop. hoops are easier to clean, and if the ear is swollen, a hoop won't be able to put pressure on it.
you can make a sea salt soak for her ear (if she will sit still for a few minutes, or she is sleeping sitting up lol) just mix a little bit of sea salt (no table salt or epsom salts, they will screw with the good tissue) with some warm water (in a small cup of course!) and then place her earlobe in the water for 5 minutes. do this a few times a day. you can also use silver paste (it is hard to find, but some health stores do carry it) silver is very antibacterial. tea tree oil is also very effective, just do not put it on her skin undiluted. all you need to do is mix a few drops with a little bit of water and dab it on her ears with a q-tip. you can also try Bactine. it is an antibacterial spray/liquid that will help numb the area (just slightly) it's great for sunburns for that reason (and on itchy tattoos!)
i hope she feels better soon :)

After a few months you can take her to get it redone at the same place and they might do it for free even. There is this spray called h2ocean that you can get at hot topic that you just spray on the piercing. Try using that from now on since rubbing can irritate the piercing. Always make sure the earrings are nice and loose and can move back and forth during cleaning with out having to press them against the ear. Just pull the backs into the locked position if they are studs. She might look funny with just one earring but you need to keep the other one in since there isn't a problem with it or it will close up and you will have to start all over with both ears.

I'm having the same problem with my lil girl she's 4months I got her ears pierced at 2 months but today I noticed a lil bit of bleeding after her bath and it felt kinda hard so I took her earring off and cleaned it up with the solution that they give for piercings and then I put Neosporin hopefully it will get better !
And her piercing won't close up

To Cayla and Hannah...Did your babies ear holes close..were the scars obvious? My 7 month old keeps getting a sore ear. I want to take them out.

Lindsey Millington : She was not asking for your opinion on piercing ears. She had an issue and was asking for opinions on how to help. If you want feel free to start your own thread about ear piercing but its not polite to crap in other peoples threads.

Cayla, I had the same problem with my daughter. I had her ears pierced at 3 months.... and finally at 7 months, I took them out. They just kept getting infected... so when she is older, and if she wants them, then we will try it again.

Thank you Jocelyn, And lindsey getting her ears pierced actually wasnt even done by me my boyfriends mother took her, so excuse me, and plus as a mother this is tearing me apart seeing my daughter not in pain because i would know if she was, but knowing that something more could happen, hense the reason i am taking her to the doctor to avoid anything entirely happening to my baby girl who is my whole entire world.

Lindsey, this is not the place for you voice your opinions regarding whether babies ears should be pierced or not. if you don't have anything helpful to contribute to the conversation, don't write anything. Cayla didn't ask to be criticized, she wanted to know how to get rid of an infection.

As someone with many piercings and tats. Just take it out and keep cleaning it. You can apply some neosprin if you want. If you dont see an improvement in a few days then call your doc.

just for you people who are being rude saying take her to the dr. right away, please understand i may have made it sound a lot worse then it is, it isnt red during the day just when i clean it out, and its not causing her any pain. I had called the jewllers that i got it pierced at and he said take out the earring and if the infection persists take her to the doctor. Not any of you that are not being supportive will be helping the situation. And i had the same problem as a child with my ears so i do know how it feels. So please be more supportive and less rude when replying to someones questions. THanks a lot

Bring her to the doctor immediately. It sounds like her ear might be growing over the earring. If there is puss, it's infected. And infections can be serious in children that small. You'll probably want to remove the earring too. But if it's grown into the ear the doctor will need to do that surgically.

Who pierced her ears? Was it done by a pediatrician or piercing shop? Or was it done at the mall? Improper care instructions are often given at mall piercing shops, and infections are common.

I agree totally. You should already be at the doctors. And I don't agree with piercing babies ears. They are small people, she should be able to make the decision if she wants to put holes in her body. My aunt and uncle pierced my cousin's ears when she was little and they got real infected. Now at 25, she still can't wear earrings because of the scars.

she should already be at the doctor, make an appointment RIGHT NOW!

have you ever had your ears pierced? are you aware that your ear can grow OVER the piercing??

this is probably whats happening with your daughter, remember she grows alot faster than we do.

hate to say it, but this is what happens when you pierce a babies ears. not a smart choice.
