Hi Mammas! I was just curious about when your babies started saying their first words and actually knew the meaning behind the word? My daughter started saying dada at 5 months old and mama around 3 weeks later. No one believed me until they saw her look me in the face , and she would hear her dads keys in the door and SCREAM dada lol

Hi! I absolutely believe you! I am a child development specialist and I can explain what you are experiencing. Most babies begin verbalizing sounds around 5-6 moths that include a vowel and a consonant. Dada is a very typical sound combination. No worries, mama is right behind!

When infants reach 11-12 months of age they know that these sounds are connected to others or objects. At the time you realize your baby is calling you and using those sounds you will know that the baby has made that connection.

So, keep up the interactions, let your baby take the lead, repeat the sounds back and you will also teach turn-taking! Pretty exciting and adorable stuff! Great work mama!

My daughter who is now 14 months says mama , dada , pap pap, ball, nice, more , no , and hi , yells "at" when she wants the cat , she has also repeated at least 10 other words she heard someone say but does not repeat them on a consistent basis but she just started walking last week so I guess she's pretty advanced talker but slow to crawl and walk

My baby is 10 months and he calls everything Dada.. apparently when I'm not at home and he is sad and missing me, he will say "mmmmum". However when I'm home, he rarely ever says it. just last week though, he started to sign "more" when I feed him and if I say "show me more", he'll bring his little hands together to sign.. sooo adorable!!

Aww the first time she said mama made me cry! I was tickling her feet and she was laughing so hard and took a deep breath and said mama in the sweetest little voice I ever heard

LOL, that's is so cute. About 5 months old, my son would say Ma-ma, usually when he really wanted me to pick him up, but it wasn't too often. And finally when he turned 7 months about 2 weeks ago, out of nowhere, he started saying Ma-ma and da-da on the same day, and he knows the difference too.
