My oldest daughter is going to be 17 months old this month and I've been getting the question of when she will be going to a toddler bed? I know a few moms who started at 15 months and they were fine. I just don't know when it's the right time? When we do make the switch do any of you mommies have any advice? Did you use the crib with the rail insert? ( we have that ) or just you turn the crib into a big girl bed and just add the safety rails?

Thanks in advance :)

I think it really depends on the child. My older son skipped the toddler bed and went straight from a crib to a twin bed. He never really slept well in the crib because he likes to stretch out and there just wasn't enough room. My baby is just about 13-months-old and has already started using a toddler bed. It works for him becuase he's a great sleeper and only gets out of bed when it's morning. Even if he cries at night, he'll just sit up and cry. When he used a crib he'd get his legs stuck int he bars and if I put the bumper on to prevent that, he'd always end up putting his head under the bumper. It works for us, but again, it depends on the child and what tehy are ready for. Good luck with your transition, whenever you decide to make it!!!

Why rush? if she sleeps well, Leave her in the cot, at least shes not escaping! My daughter was almost three, coz i was told to leave her in there till she climbed out and then i'd know.......she never climbed out!! (but it was also a big cot so she wasn't cramped in it) But she loved her bed from the first night. She still loves bedtime. She'll put herself in bed by 7 most nights coz she's tired!

Thanks again ladies! I'd like to get her into a toddler bed before she's two ( if it's possible ) just so when we start trying to potty train she can go use the potty if she needs to

mys on is 16 months and we just put him in his toddler bed 2 months ago. we dont have much of a choice because i have a 2 month old who will need the crib within a month. so far he's been great with it. if he gets up he'll just sit in his bed and cry. this morning he was standing at the door waiting for me to come get him.

I put my daughter in a toddler bed 2 months before she turned 2. Her father thinks that she should go back into the crib but i beg to differ. I've learned that you must put a gate up so they can't come out and sit on the floor and wonder around. i do take it down before I go to bed so she can come and get me in the middle of the night. She does get up and out of bed after we put her in it but she plaies quietly in her room and climbs back into bed. Sometimes when you want them to go to bed they might not be tired or even ready.

The one time my son got out and started playing, I went and got him and told him that when it was time to wake up in the morning he could get up and play. I know he's only one and I'm not sure that he understands 100%, but he seemed to get it.

Thanks!! We've had the same bedtime routine forever so maybe she'll do fine. I might try in a month or two :)

once you put her into a bed its best not to go back to a cot as it confuses the child.....make sure there is a stair gate on the door so she cant get out and hurt herself ( as when i just closed the door sometimes he feel asleep behind it)....i found its best to establish a routiune, with my son it was bath, book read in bed then bed time. as for the getting out of bed let her learn its her bed and keep putting her back...try not to have conversations ect with her or let her maniliulate you......it can sometimes be a problem when changing to a big bed but just be consistent and it will all be fine......good luck

Thanks ladies! She's a really good sleeper she sleeps through the night has ever since she was 3 months old. About a month ago we got rid of the pacifier, which wasn't too hard. I am just afraid if we do the toddler bed where she has the option to get out, then she will get out of her bed and just play and not sleep. What do you do if they keep getting out? Do you put the crib back together? Or just let them learn?

i agree with britany it depends on the child...when i did it with my son i started him on a matteress on the floor then into a normal single bed.........the most important hting is to trust ur insincts you know you child and will know wot is best for her
