My son is about 8 Months and 2 weeks. He sits up if you sit him up, but then falls back or to the side. When about should he be doing it on his own, and what can we do to teach him to do it?

My baby just reached 10 months and still doesn't do the typical crawl. (Some babies skip it all together). And Betty Jean is right...he may start doing it out of nowhere. My son was rolling and scooting to get where he wanted then BAM! One day last week discovered the "army man crawl" where he pushes with his feet and pulls with his arms. Now, he is zooming all over the place. I would try and try with the 'putting a toy out his reach' to try to get him to crawl to it. He'd roll to it, pick it up, then flop over on his back and play with it. Then, last week he had a fascination with the box that his new car seat came in. Sadly, that's what it took for him to actually WANT to go somewhere. haha

He could start crawling by tonight. It just happens and then you get to find out what still needs to be baby proofed.
You could try placing a toy just out of reach so he will want to go for it but don't tease him. If he is scooting around or doing army crawl he may not have any motivation to learn how to crawl on his hands and knees.

That's exactly why I stated that every baby is different. They all do things at their own pace. :)

People need to stop saying what is 'normal' for babies. They are babies. Nothing is normal because they are individuals. If your baby cant sit up yet just let it be and put the baby on his tummy to play. When he wants to sit up she will pull himself up to a sitting position. You can practice with him if you want to but none of this stuff goes on his resume and the other babies will still think he is cool.

The norm is around 6 months...however each child hits miles stones at different times. I used the bumbo seat for my daughter (not all have been recalled) and the boppy pillow...i would place it around her and set a busy toy in front of her to keep her attention. The more you do it with them the more they facilitate them for themselves. be patient it will happen with time :D

Just sit him up with some toys in a boppy pillow. Is he leaning forward to balance himself? A toy right in front of him will prompt him to do this. Soon as he figures out how to keep his balance he will be a pro at this. Try doing this while he is mellowed out because he will need to focus a little.
This is like someone teaching you how to walk a tight rope.

Quoting Lauren:

They have since recalled the Bumbo seat... I don't know why but this helped with 2 of my kids. Try just setting him up on your couch... he will crawl around, and i always put pillows and blankets on the floor just in case a head dive was going to happen!

Bumbo seat recalled? Whaaaat?!

I don't even understand HOW it could be harmful. That's just weird.

I think the 'standard' age is around 6 months. (of course every baby is different). When my son was around 5 months old, we got him a "Bumbo" seat. It's a little seat that totally surrounds him so that he stays upright and it cannot flip over or anything. I don't know what the size/age limits are on it, but..it MAY help to get him used to staying upright. Good luck!
