I'm so over the whole trying to go big for the holidays and really do not want a selfish child who expects it always to be "big" So when is it best to explain to them the true meaning and really celebrate that whether then the whole fairy tale scenario

My 5 yr old knows what the holidays are for. We told her as soon as she started asking. If your child is old enough to ask when is Santa coming and such then they are old enough to be told what the meaning of the holiday is. By meaning I mean why it is celebrated. I told her around 2yrs that every holiday is for spending time with family and those you love...even birthdays. None of them are about the gifts...which is something many kids think these days. My daughter actually gives away old toys around the beginnning of december in anticipation of christmas and being able to give one of her toys that she doesn't need to another kid to enjoy. A child less fortunate then her who may not have everything she does.

Hey we told our children from the beginning what the holidays meant... and we never lied to them about the easter bunny, Santa Claus, and all of that.. I figured that if they found out that we had lied to them about all of that then they would consider it ok to lie.. That is just us.. and with a Christian Background.. I was always taught that lying only gets you in more trouble.. So.. that is just my expertise on the subject.

if you feel that you really don't want a big holiday anymore and you don't want them to be selfish tell them now! we don't have big holidays! my son knows the most important part of the holidays is being with our family! I hope this helps!
