Sam is 11 months old and I have been told to start her on whole milk. She doesn't like it. Can she have 2% instead?

Quoting Sarah:

of course. whole milk has way too much fat anyway. it's created for baby cows that grow up to weigh a ton and have 2 stomachs. and we wonder where our country's obesity problems come from.

I've never drank anything but whole milk for the past 22 years of my life. I have never had a problem with my weight. Infact, I am 5'4 and only 95 lbs. When I was pregnant. I gained 35lbs and lost it all while still drinking whole milk at every meal.

To answer the question. I want to say two things. All the peds I saw, said to wait until 1 year to give a child/toddler milk. Secondly, if you do choose to introduce milk, you could try pediasure. It is made from milk and has the fat, calories and nutrients needed for your child to grow properly.

They say to give them the whole milk because vitamin D and the fat help with brain development. However, you can give you daughter vitamin drops instead. I don't know if you mixed it with her formula/breast milk or not, but that also helps them transition into drinking regular milk. Also if your daughter likes yogurt I just found out that the yoplait kids yogurt has DHA in it which also helps with brain development and eye sight and what not.

When my 5 1/2 year old turned one, we were told to give her whole milk until she was at least 2. I did. She never complained... she just drank it. Now, when my youngest turned one, her doctor (both girls have the same one so I'm assuming that it's the thinking that's changed) told me to give her 2%. There's not much difference in their height/weight ratios so there's no real reason that I was told one thing for the one and something totally different for the other. I say go for it... unless your child is underweight. Then I'd try adding some flavor to it (just a little!)

My little girl did not like milk either, so her doctor told me to add flavoring to it. I started adding chocolate to it. She loves drinking it. As long as it is not white milk.

My son is 9 months old, and we were told to start him on whole milk. He didn't seem to like 3%, he likes 2% and doesn't mind having some 3% in it just to put a bit of fat into his milk.

My three year old daughter was the same way. I gave her 2% and she is perfectly fine. Unless she has medical reasons, such growth or being under weight issues I wouldnt see a problem.
