Possibly for the same reasons that adults do, because of stress or nervous energy. My son doesn't do this, but my nieces did so my sister in law put on this nail polish sold in stores that's supposed to taste bad. I guess if that doesn't work, what about finding something for them to hold onto, or a good form of a stress relief.

My four year old has picked up this habit recently. He's always had an issue with putting stuff in his mouth, but he hasn't had me cut his nails in at least three or four months. I'm not sure what to do, but I've thought of that nail polish that deters it but I haven't researched the safety of it for a child his age yet. I think it is a nervous habit, I myself used to chew pens and pencils and if I'm not careful its the first place a pen or pencil goes when I have one in my hand.

i'd really like to know too, my son is 3 and half and has started doing it recently it drives me nuts, i think perhaps its my fault as i used to bite mine but havent in 5 mths.ive noticed he seems to do it alot more when he's shy or feeling uncomfortable.

Best of luck :)

hey i used to be really bad for bitting my nails... well it took a few things to get me to stop. I would bite my nails even if i had nail polish on them!!! It took my grandma telling my ladies don't bite there nails, and i saw picutes of what kind of nasty stuff grew under everyones nails..... After i saw that i gave up biting my nails.... do a serch on the net of germs and bacteria that grown under fingernails , and show her!!! don't forget to tell her what kind of illnesses she can get form biting her nails! i hope this helps , it helped me !!
