Taking Medicine

Kelli - posted on 03/11/2009 ( 2 moms have responded )

My 4 year old daughter has ALL. We are a little over 4 months into diagnosis. We first stayed in the hospital for basically the month of November and was released and didn't stay again for 2 months! Of course now it seems every other week with a fever and now every other week for long stay treatment.

My question though is medicine. She takes her 6MP really well b/c we mix it with a little pancake syrup, but anything else is a battle. We've tried to practice with mini M & M's but she can't seem to work a pill. She takes bacterium 3 times a week twice a day. We mix with a little juice because that is what she wants, but it's a 30-45 min battle each time. We get flavored meds too. If anyone has any good suggestions I'm willing to try. We've tried bribery and everyting. We don't want to yell, but she needs to take it and she's too young to understand.

Please let me know of anything that could help!

I know its been awhile since you posted this, but what we did for our daughter seemed to work well. She would refuse any of her med's if someone else was giving them to her. We handed her the syringe and let her pretend to push it up (with our help of course)..and she would take it no problem. Also had her show...big sisters' brother, grandma and grandpa how she could be a big girl and do it herself! Hope this works!

I feel your pain! My son, alex was 3 when he was diagnosed with ALL in 1992, he is now almost 20 and is perfect, so take heart and have hope! I remember crying and crying because Alex would not take his medicine...I called his nurse and she told him over the phone he had to take his medicine and he had to obey worked! he took it! some of the things we did was the pills that had to be crushed at nite we  put in apple sauce and called it "the applesauce medicine" Bactrim i think he just drank it plain and we chased it with juice or something...Alex understood he had to take it if he was going to get better...we told him the medicines were like the ninja turtles (they were popular at the time) running in and beating up the bad guys so he could get well...

Good luck and let me know how it goes, I know none of this is fun and is very stressful for you and everyone in your ellen

PS you are very pretty, I am sure your little girl is just as beautiful...
