My 19 month old who is perfectly capable of feeding himself and eating regular food has totally given up on a normal diet. I am seriously at my wits end. The only food he is consistently picking at are the Gerber stage three foods. He is way past baby food and it is so frustrating to me! The only other foods he will eat are not the healthiest for him and this drives me nutso! Any help for a frustrated mom?

I am having that issue with my 13 month old. at first he was having texture issues and wouldnt eat anything but baby food. now he is so determined to feed himself he wont eat baby food, but still doesnt want to touch things and is so picky we cant find anything but waffles and grilled cheese to feed him. he will now eat gerber fruit bars, and fruit strips. so we do feed him some of the gerber graduates stuff, but he wont eat the meals. we have tried the whole, if you dont eat, then you dont. but that would mean he wouldnt eat all day. so he might get grilled cheese twice a day. the important thing is to keep trying. what they wont eat one day, they might the next. so i rotate things out every week.

Ditto to what she Rachel said! My two year old has gone through several very picky stages.. the important thing is not to give in and let him eat junk! Also remember that at this point in their lives.. they are not yet trained to eat just for the sake of eating. In most cases ( of course there are a few exceptions) they eat when they are hungry and they eat until they are satisfied. he will eat when he is ready and when that happens.. have severaly healthy options to offer. I find it helps to sometimes offer new healthy choices. Sometimes their curiosity is your best weapon!  Good luck!!!

I think most kids at this age go through the same thing. The most important thing is to offer several healthy options. Whether the child eats it or not is up to them but our job is just to offer it. If they really are hungry, they will eat. But don't offer a healthy option and then if they refuse, offer a junk food option. He will only learn from that to be a picky eater. Just offer a bit of variety of healthy foods and if he doesn't want it, don't push it. Just try again in an hour or so. My son loves something one day and won't touch it the next. Then one day he eats quite a lot and the next doesn't seem to eat anything!  Its fine. :)
