I had to start generating an income after my year of mat was over but I didn't want to go back to "work". But we have a maxed out credit card, a mortgage, bills that we can't pay off (they have contracts which are pricey to get out of) and we we're living so far in draft, there was almost no such thing as paycheck to paycheck for us. I started babysitting part time, and that has helped us a little bit but we're still stuck in draft. So I started waitressing weekend nights at a pub. It brings in quite a bit too. We started to get our overdraft closer to zero, but it just kind of plataued. Is there and online site for changing your attitude to budgeting and money related to financial decisions we make? Or does anyone have some tips and advice on similar situations and what they did or are doing to get out of it? Thanks!

My husband and I are in a similar situation. We LOVE Dave Ramsey. He gives GREAT financial advice and has really helped us manage what little money we have and has a ton of great tips. He has a program that follows baby steps to getting debt free and living within ur means. It's tough but there is definitely hope. Good luck.

get rid of some of the basics, they add up...like cable, home phone, etc. bundle if you can on utilities. do you really need every gaming system and game? america today needs to get back to basics and what is most important...family. stop using cc unless absolutely necessary. never use a balloon payment on mortgage or put your car on your home mortgage...all bad ideas

Even though you have a temporary fix to your problem, make sure to budget now. We fell into the trap of taking out more and more money with our mortgage on a home that wasn't worth it in the end. Please be careful.
PS my husband would do the same about tires and such!

Good for you! My hubby did the same that is why you set aside so much each month for car repairs and don't touch the envelope for nothing! except baby needs food, you need food or a rood over your head and write that on the envelope it may help. No CC though. men are so funny. Oh and good for you for staying at home with your babies. I like Dr. Laura and she believes that as well.

BUDGET BUDGET BUDGET. There are so many things in this world we can get rid of. We're on a spending "fast" right now to save up money for our insurance. Don't put things on the credit card. Don't spend money that isn't there. We spent too much during the holidays and are now paying for it. $50 grocery trips for the next 4 weeks. No shopping for mommy. That's life. Gotta take responsibility for the decisions I made in the last 8 weeks. No bueno, but you live you learn!

Well we were able to consolidate our debt through our bank, and it may be longer but our payments are less than our mortgage payments were. We're still paying off our debts but starting fresh. And wer'e saving so much that now I'm able to stop babysitting and just continue on at the pub where I work on the weekends! But I thought I was the one with money problems! Yesterday my husband said, "well if we'll have room on the cc again, we should get winter tires for the van." OMG, this is exactly how we got into debt! I would rather save up the money and then buy them or wait till just after xmas when we get our xmas money from my parents. Wow, he sure floored me! I almost smacked him upside the head!

Firstly, what do you usually spent money on? and how much?
I know whats its like to be in a hard situation, but we are almost out of it.

Dave Ramsey is wonderful. I also started my own home business with a company that has products that are less expensive than grocery store brands. This helps with the budgeting as well. Every little bit helps.

I am seconding all the Dave Ramsey recommendations. We would not be where we are today without him. He has a website and also a great book - The Total Money Makeover. Check it out today!! We were maxed out everywhere possible - had payments galore, a couple of years later we are debt free except for our mortgage and we have a sizable savings and we did it all by ourselves (with Dave's advice). It's simple and easy to follow. I feel like a commercial - but it's so true!!

I spoke to our bank and we've been able to consolidate our debt together along with our mortgage. We'll be saving tons a month! We just need to hear back from one part of them who may need an appraisal done on our house, even though we just got it two years ago. But if it all goes through I can quit my babysitting with the money we'll be saving and if I cut back in certain areas in our budget I'd be able to cut back to 1 shift a weekend at the pub I waitress at! This is so exciting and my husband is thrilled. We just need to keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. Over the past while here I've definitely decided I need to be home with my children, hopefully everything works out!

Erin,

It sounds like you may be able to apply for assistance. I don't know where you live, but where I am we have the DHS that provides food assistance, medical and help with some bills. That may help you to get back on your feet!!!!
